Pylons Tank!

Test results
Nitrate 0
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
Phos 0
PH 8.2
Ca 435
KH 107.4
Iodine .03 or .08

So heres the deal with the iodine test
the first time I did it I crushed the componets at the bottom of the testing cell and then I read that not all of the componest would dissolve so I though I wasn't suppose to crush the stuff at the bottom that didn't dissolve and I got a .03
So I did the test again, and I got a .08

So crush or do not crush? I'm using the seachem testing kit.

I think the question should be test, or not test. I've messed with iodine test kits in the past (years ago), but they were too big a PIA, so I stopped. That was about the same time I stopped worrying about iodine in the system.

I say just follow the directions. Seachem make decent tests, so I'm guessing they should know. You could try calling or e-mailing them if you're not sure.

Alright

on another note, I came home today and my tank was a mess, the snails were busy knocking things over I accidentally broke one of the smaller frags off the plug (it didn't stick to the glue is it just slid right out really)

Just stick it one of the holes in the rock if u don't feel like re-gluing it. yea, u may want to rethink the big *** snail scenario. Turbos are problematic. You may want to see if you can find some smaller snails. The true banded Trochus have always been a good snail for me, as have Stomatella sp. Both can be difficult to find, though, and you always have to be on guard for those selling imposters.

Sorry about your Nem:sad2:, I hope he makes it.

I posted on your thread earlier, I didn't have a tank yet. I have continued to follow your progress and I have really enjoyed your posts. Just wanted to let you know that I am going to pick up a 100g setup today that I found on craigslist for a great deal. So I will get to start the journey you have gone through with a few hurdles to go through. The tank comes with 1 tang, 3 clowns and a neon pink and yellow fish. I am going to have to place them in an old 29g tank I have. I hope I can keep them alive until I get the larger tank set up. Anyway I'm excited and I just wanted to share.:bounce3:

Sorry to hear that Pylon. :( The system must not be quite ready for a bta just yet, or you got a dud. It happens. You need to post your calcium numbers as well - those are important, too.

Rene'-

You'd probably do well to take the fish to a local fish store and get credit for them. That way you'll be able to start out with animals of your choosing. A 29 gallon is not going to be large enough for the tang - not even temporarily. Tangs are open water fish, and hate confinement. The animal will go bonkers in such a small setup.

I was thinking of possibly doing that. I won't be able to take them to my lfs until tomorrow. The tank is 2hrs. away and my lfs is an hour the other direction from me. Like Pylon I live in the middle of everywhere. I'm at least an hr. from any large towns. I do have to go to town tomorrow so I will probably take him and trade him in. Thanks DJ

PS: Pylon I will start my own thread so that I don't hijack yours.

Cool, I hope you post a journal with what you're doing with your tank!
I think the one I got is a dude, I was taking him out last night and he stuck to my hand so I figured there was still some life to him. This morning I checked on him and he was on a turbo snail shell gettign a tour of the tank.
I just got home and he's n a rock, but his stomach is still way out, he still doesn't look good.

I'll get some new pictures up today.

reefs2go is giving me a credit for the anenome. When I order the replacement I'll get some Banded Trochus Snails along with it.

Hi, we set up our temp 29g tank. This is so much fun!!! I can't wait until I get the larger tank set up. I started a new thread. 29g Temp Tank Setup!!! We have the Tang (I will see how he does, might go to the fish store, so far he seems ok), 2 Percula Clowns, 1 Maroon clown and 1 False Gramma. He has been hiding and the pictures I took of the Maroon clown did not turn out well. I will try again later.

wow they gave u full credit for what u payed for? i gotta use that site=)

Yes they did, I feel their concern was genuine.
I will possibly be ordering the replacement in the next couple days.. I guess I am still pulling for the original nem, but I really think he's just barely holding on.

OK, here's where it gets tricky. The banded Trochus that reefstogo.com sells are not true banded Trochus. They are actually snails from the genus Tectus in the family Trochidae, the same family that Trochus sp are ascribed to.

OK, true 'banded Trochus' snails are in the genus Trochus, and usually consist of one of 5 separate species within this genus - stellatus, radiatus, squarrosus, chloromphalus, or erithreus. I believe from the pictures that you posted the cone shaped snail you have now is in fact one of the Tectus sp (prob triserialis, or fenestratus). What you should be looking for is this guy here.

Anyway, the Tectus sp snails are OK, but their survival rate in adverse systems is not that good. In other words they aren't very tough - certainly not as strong as the bandeds. Good luck, and hope this helps.

Thanks DJ, if thye wont have the true ones I wont get any

I pulled my nem out, I think he's just been fish food for the last day or two, i've noticed that he's pretty badly torn up. I took him out and put him in a bowl, in the process I think he ripped a little.. he doesn't stink yet so we'll see..

I also did a 3 gal water change
Salinity is up to 1.024

well.. My anemone just took the big freshwater slide to the sky.

:( I hope to order his replacement next week, however I may wait a while.
