Q for 24 AP users

Did anyone try going BB with your 24APs? I'm learning that my sandbed that is about 2'' thick causes the nitrate to go off the charts even when slightly disturbed, usually resulting in an unfortunate death of some sensitive inverts. When I have to move this tank out of the dorms in May, I'm thinking of setting it up as BB back home. Any experiences?

Wouldnt bare bottom look ugly though? I have the same tank and my sandbed is about 1.5 inches thick, Iv never had any problems with it. Just shrink it a bit.

I'm slowly starting to convert to BB theorists. Once the BB has been covered with coraline and corals, I don't think it will look so bad. Only reason for the sand being purely aesthetic, I don't really want to keep'em in there since my AP has high bioload. I don't think it helps much.

What critters do you have in the tank to kep the sand stirred and detrious cleared? With some sand stirrers your 2" SBB shouldn't release that much waste to make your nitrates go off the chart.
