QT Advice for Powder Blue

I have always wanted one of these fish, but they have such a bad rap for coming in with problems I have never attempted. I think that is about to change.

I set up a 90g in October, it has been running with only a cleaner shrimp since then. I was actually going to tear it down but I thought what a great place to QT a Powder Blue Tang.

I was going to remove the shrimp, drop the salinity, and see how it goes. Probably use prazi before he goes in the QT. Keep him there for a few months and then, if all is good toss him in the display,

Any advice or suggestions on how I can be more succsessful?

Sounds like a great plan. 90g is a great size for quarantine. There is a good article here about how to successfully quarantine:-

Of course it does depend on your favoured method, which sounds like hyposalinity. The most important thing with the PBT in quarantine I would suggest is to give it a decent period to monitor and get it feeding well to aid its immune system.
If you give it a good couple of months then you should spot any problems within that time, I think prazi is a good idea, and if you want to give any other treatment then you are in a position to do that.

I would stick a powerhead in there as well. A little more flow is always nice for tangs.
+1

I had a noticeably better survival rate in my QT after I added more flow.

I QT'd my powder blue for 3 months. No meds or hypo. I just observed and made sure it was eating. He's happy and fat in my DT now.

I would do 12 day tank transfer in smaller vessels immediately upon receiving him then into your 90 for observation. TTM delivered great success in my first attempt with a PBT.

+2 on robust flow in QT. Helps significantly with getting problem fish feeding as the rapid movement of the food elicits an aggressive feeding response in many fish.

Thanks for the link, it was a good refresher. I have been QTing fish for about 15 years, just never a PBT.

For water movement I currently have about 900gph from the sump return and a WP 40 set on a wave mode.

I have a similar amount of flow (little more) in my display so I was hoping a similiar environment will help transfer to the display easier.

I guess I should have mentioned I also have 140# of live rock in the tank that has been in there since it was setup and came from a previous tank I had setup for ten years.

I was also hoping for some advice on feeding. I had planned on Rods food and Nori.

Can you help me understand why smaller tanks and what the TTM method is please. I have never heard of this.

I appreciate all the help. I've wanted this fish for 10 years and really wanna do well with it. It'll break my heart if I loose one. Just trying to set myself up he best I can to be successful with the animal

Typically in our QT tanks:
- Lots of PVC
- Powerhead on each end of the tank mounted about half way down pointing to the surface.
- Airpump and airstone.
- HOB filter running seeded filter pad and seeded MarinePure spheres.
- Small heater.
- 2 Ammonia badges.
- Cover.

Works like a champ :)

Little update.

Well we are 10 days in to QT now. At first there was some food issue, but now he seems to be eating very well (4-5x a day). Time to fatten him up a bit and see how the rest all plays out.

I'm pretty stoked. Can't wait to see him in my display.
