QT and Achilles Tang(He is on the way)

10-4! Thanks for the tip, he should be here any minute now. Been waiting all morning lol Ya, Im also guessing during feeding you turn the powerhead off as well as you would a DT? I was unsure about the betta but it was the only fish my GF really liked and was able to go into the aquarium so I had to get it :D I never have had experience with one, but I hear there easy fish to care for.

With most fish I don't bother turning off the powerhead to feed, but that's a personal choice :P doesn't really matter. The betta would probably appreciate it, as I don't think they are really the type to chase down food. I haven't personally kept one though, so maybe someone who has first hand experience with one can chime in.

He arrived a little over 30 minutes ago. Floated the bag in the the QT let it get to temp, and slow adding water with a 1/4 tube to the bag. Salinity and temp are even with the bag and the tank. Another 30 minutes or so and ill release him into the QT. It appears to me he is a Trident tailed AT, this is very feint at the moment and hopefully I can get a picture of him after work. I can definitely see a third trident for his tail, but he isn't fully matured my guess is it will be more predominant the older he gets. Ill keep you posted!

Just got home, noticed he had picked at the seaveggies some. Also put in some mysis/brine/rods food mixed and he was picking on the brine shrimp. So I added just straight brine and he gobbled it up, was too enthused but ate a good amount. Once he settles Im guessing he will go crazy during feeding. Definitely a good sign to see him eat though. He is also very active and not shy at all. He hides when I come near the tank but thats it, If I sit there for a min he is out wondering around.

I am a firm believer in not treating what isn't there. I wouldn't put any medications in the tank unless he breaks out with ich or something.

I believe that metronidazole sometimes helps a fish to start eating. I generally do that almost immediately and then prazi after a couple of days and then start the copper for 4-6 weeks.

My achilles was QT'd in a 10g on the kitchen counter. I think having people around all the time during QT makes them friendlier.

Watch the cycle if it's not an established QT tank. You don't want to lose your fish to ammonia!

I was thinking about that. I was thinking of leaving him in QT for 3-4 weeks and monitoring him for anything. Unless I notice it then actually start adding meds.
I don't think the tank should cycle I used 80% DT water and 20% fresh mixed. I did a 2 gallon water change about an hour ago just to siphon the stuff off the bottom. I think I ****ed him off some by doing it he seemed fussed after it. He is eating well but doesn't seem at home. Is this normal?

I have one question, Did any of your AT's change color for any reason? Also do they ever stop swimming? Even with the lights out and pitch black he still seems to be pacing back and forth...

Using DT water will do nothing to prevent ammonia. The bacteria is in the rock/substrate not the water. Keep an eye out for ammonia and use Amquel or similar along with water changes to keep it in check.

Considered doing tank transfer to prevent Ich?

I don't have traceable ammonia but suspect it as a problem in the future, how long could it take one AT to rise it in the 29g QT?

Depends on the amount of food you feed and his often you feed it.

What do you have for biological filtration on the QT? At a minimum, I would recommend a HOB style filter with some kind of biological media ,(bioballs or the like) to mitigate the ammonia. A skimmer is also a great idea to help with oxygen saturation in the water.

It seems like practically immediately. I sacrificed some live rocks to the QT tank to make sure it doesn't get bad.

Always handy to have extra rock to put into the QT. I had two fish in a 29g QT just 2 wks ago for 8 wks with liverock and two filters and only did 2 water changes in that time, never had any ammonia. Get a ammonia alert badge, they let you know immediately when you have a issue with ammonia

Ya I have had an ammonia alert badge in the WT the whole time and it hasnt shown any traceable ammonia yet. I was just worried about it, I put in 2 pieces of spare LR I think that should help it. As far as filtration goes, I have a small HOB filter and 2 powerheads. Figured you dont really need much for a single 29g QT. I do plan on setting up a full time QT area and that will have a skimmer on it.

+1 on the ammonia badge for sure.

So was this a barebones QT then? What kind of media do you have in the HOB filter? It's not the volume of the tank that is important for the filtration, its the input of nutrients (food).

Personally not a fan of LR in quarantine, but understand why you did it. I'm sure you know this, but be sure to take it out before you treat for anything.

I know it was discussed earlier, and it's just my $0.02, but I plan to treat my AT with Cupramine and Prazipro. If none of your fish right now have been through that regimen, then it doesn't really matter, but currently, all the fish in my DT have been.

Hope it does well for you, mine has been super finicky, but it's finally starting to come around.

I have a question, has anyones AT really seemed resltess at night? Mine does great during the day eats like a champ, green seaweed, red seaweed, and brine shrimp. But when the lights go out he gets very frantic it seems like. He swims low to the bottom and paces back and forth. He seems very healthy no signs of any disease at the moment. My guess is if he were to get it he would have already shown signs of it.

I'd cover the tank with a towel after lights out to encourage him to rest, but it's not abnormal for them to swim constantly either. My big guy seems even more active at night. If I have to get up in the middle of the night for something and glance at the tank, he's cruising.

Will he be alright in a PH around 8? J/W cause thats what my tank usually hangs at.

Thanks for all the help, btw.
