QT Filter question

Another questions - what treatments should I have on hand and what interactions should I be careful off?

Ammo-lock - keep Ammonia levels down during 3 day stay per tank - do not use with Copper treatment
prazi-pro - flukes, tapeworm, flatworm, and internal parasites

anything else I should get?

I may be wrong, but I think that I remember Tom recommending a formalin dip before beginning the tank transfer procedure.

thanks for the reminder - he did mention that.

QT process so far:

*increase salinity slowly along the way

with closed bag, float to temp
formalin dip with new salt mix at salinity < that original or < 1.017 if unsure
move into QT tank with ammo-lock & prazi-pro at salinity < that original or < 1.017 if unsure
[3 day wait]
formalin dip with new salt mix at salinity = to previous
move into DRY QT tank with ammo-lock & prazi-pro at salinity = to previous
[3 day wait]
formalin dip with new salt mix at salinity = to previous
move into DRY QT tank with ammo-lock & prazi-pro at salinity = to previous
[3 day wait]
formalin dip with new salt mix at salinity = to previous
move into DRY QT tank with ammo-lock
50% acclimate to display water

How about fresh water dips - worth it?

Aquaclear filters are some of the best HOB filters, IMO. I used them on my freshwater tanks before I bought my eheims. They have a sponge, a carbon media bag, and then biomax pellets that help maintain beneficial bacteria. They also have an ammonia remover media bag that you can put in the filter. I just used my own filter bags and replaced the carbon when needed. You could use small filter bags for both activated carbon and ammonia remover pellets to help manage any potential ammonia issues in the QT tanks.

My choice would be a powerhead with a piece of PVC pipe rigged as a media container. Put a cap on one end and leave the other end open. Make a hole in the cap such that it fits tightly over the inlet on your powerhead. Put the media in a small bag and put it in the pipe.

Ive had good luck with cheesy walmart hob. 10$ ? For the15g unit. Be really carefull mixing, chemicals and meds. Follow tmz instructions to the letter. Mixing and matching treatments can be deadly. Little things like carbon, or using copper with angels can be deal breakers. Definitely a case where more is not always better.

+1 for the Aquaclear HOB's. I have one on my 10g nano and it works great!

As for the FW dips, I used FW dip when my fish had a bout of Black Ich. I did not use any chemicals at all. The FW dip worked great along with a long QT and hyposalinity.
