QT Moorish Idol

Long story short, I'm picking up a couple of MI tomorrow that have been conditioned at a LFS for several weeks now and are eating a variety of packaged foods. Last time I QT'd one, I used CP and was successful. This time around I am not too concerned about Velvet (as they have been held in non-copper tanks), but obviously I want to prophylactically treat for Ich, Flukes. So, I was thinking of utilizing tank transfer and then Prazi. However, I am little hesitant about doing TT on a MI as they have a reputation for being a bit on the delicate side.

Suggestions? Thoughts? Anyone here have any experience doing TT on a Moorish Idol?

I personally would not qt a MI in less than a 4 foot tank which makes TT difficult. I've ran several through copper and all did well afterwards.

I've been successful with copper too. I don't think MIs are really difficult; they are just extremely reluctant to start eating anything. I think this may be the point where most are lost. A MI will refuse all foods for weeks, then start turning black, and that's it. But when the do eat, they will eat anything and live for years. FWIW: I'm not on the side that says they need a lot of sponge. I had two prior to Katrina, for about 10 years and have two since relocating; About 7 yrs. The only sponge they ever see is the occasional bits in the frozen angel mix I feed once in a while.

Thanks for the input/advice. I'm gonna roll the dice on TT. I'll report back detailing my success/failure. Wish me luck!

Well, the LFS hosed me on the Idols so this whole thing is a no-go. If I ever QT a MI in the future using TT; I'll update this thread accordingly.

Just thought I'd revive an old thread rather than start a new one.....

I got in a medium-sized MI from LA on Tuesday. Acclimated him to a 29 gal QT around noon; by 5-6pm he was eating live blackworms & nori. The next day he also ate frozen brine & mysis. Not just eating passively, but really going after it! So yeah, I was :lol2:.

But on Wednesday I also noticed some twitching, so I decided to begin Prazi treatment as he was eating so well. His appetite was fine the first day of Prazi, but has diminished since then to the point where he'll no longer eat today (Saturday).

The twitching has also gotten worse. So, I'm thinking maybe he has Crypto in the gills (no cysts are visible).

So, what do you guys think? Next round of Prazi is due on Tuesday. My original plan was to do Prazi first, then treat with CP afterwards. This MI is too large for TT, IMO. But the not eating thing and the twitching getting worse makes me think maybe I should just abandon Prazi for now and go straight to CP. Thoughts?

I usually do a round of PP on new fish first thing; but any sign of protozoan parasites and I run carbon for a day and dose copper (or CP).

Yeah, the problem with twitching is it can be any number of things. Usually flukes or parasites in the gills, but it's also a possible symptom of neurotoxicity. :uhoh2:

I had hoped it was just flukes, so that's why I started the Prazi treatment first. But since Prazi hasn't stopped (or at least diminished) the twitching, I'm starting to wonder.

I'd like to finish the 2 rounds of Prazi and get it out of the way; but I'm also concerned that if I wait too long and this is indeed parasites... I hate dilemmas! :sad1:

Well, he's back to eating frozen brine. I normally don't freak when a fish stops eating - but this is a Moorish Idol. I've had them stop eating in QT and that's it. I've also just noticed what appears to be a Lympho spot on him. Could this be what he's twitching about?

Never seen a fish twitch with lympho. I had my MI come in twitching and a 10 min bath helped relieve the twitching...although I couldn't see anything in the bath water.
