Hi,

I am relatively new to the hobby and glad to find the local forum here! Are there any quality acrylic aquarium builder in bay area? I heard about World Marine Systems, but it is no where to be found on internet. I got quotes from Truvu, Midwest and AdvancedAcrylics. If possible, I think I would like to use the shipping fee somewhere else.

What's the reason why you want to go with acrylic?

The choice between acrylic and glass may be subjective. In my case it is the weight. I plan to do an 8' tank on ground floor above crawlspace, between (not across) beams. Glass (low iron or not) will be extremely heavy. I don't want to do anything in crawlspace.

Google Kritter Tanks
I think Gen is in Menlo Park

Thanks, will look it up.

Glass or acrylic, an 8' tank will be very heavy... You may be in crawlspace sooner than you think!

The kinda of money we spend on our tanks. Whats a grand or two to have someone reinforce the floor? Shoot I know some Brazilians that'll hand dig a basement while they're down there.

I got an 8' x 3' tank from James at Envision Acrylics. He isn't local, but is nearby in Oregon so the shipping might be a little cheaper. I also bought my earlier 120 gallon tank from him. Can't recommend him highly enough.

But yeah, you should look into reinforcing where the tank is going to go. I think the weight advantage of an 8' acrylic tank is mostly in the installation when you'll have an easier time getting it into place, and if you got a couple of strong friends you should be able to maneuver it pretty easily. You'll need more help to move a glass aquarium of that size. But once you start putting water into it, the weight of the tank becomes a tiny fraction of the overall weight.
