Queen Angel or Blue Angel??

blue angels tend to have brown in the base of the tail with a broken crown or a blue dot where the queen's crown would be. The body of the Blue is usually a gray blue. Queen angels have a totally yellow tail. That combine with the well shaped crown and and yellow body says to me its just a run of the mill queen angel. They do darken up with age though, I worked with one queen angel that was about 10 inches at AquaCorals here in Maine for a while that was all yellow like that. After a year or so it started getting the really nice green hues on its head and body. They don't stay yellow for ever. Every townsend angel I've ever seen has just been a mix of the two.

She has the crown and blue lines on the back of the dorsal and anal fins. What makes her more blue than queen? Just asking.

The lack of black in the center of the crown (At least what from what I can see in the video. Is the center black?) and the brownish color of the fish. Compare the body color of the fish to the tail color. The fish should have more blue IMO.

I feel like it should look more like this if it was full queen:

And maybe it does, but it is hard to tell from the quality of the video.

From what I can see though, mostly blue angel...

Hmmm, maybe more queen in there, now that I look at it again. Definitely not full queen. Queens have a LOT of electric blue/royal blue on the back edges of the dorsal/anal fins, where they meet the tail, regardless of age. (Edit: like the pic shown above)

The fish in the video, from what I can see through the reflection on the glass ;) has very little blue on those areas of the dorsal/anal fins.

My Fish does actually have Blue Edges around its body... To me, it's lacking a lot of the Blue marks around the face.

True queens have a big black crown outlined in blue with blue specks in it. One of the biggest dead giveaways is when they lack this. If the crown is all blue or lacks a lot of the black it definitely has blue angel in it, and usually the townsend mixes tend to look more like blue angels than queens as far as wow factor IMO.

Queens and blues look similar when they are small but by age queens will develope a large, black crown with blue specks. Blues,in the other hand, will turn into a golden fish with yellow fins. Most Townsends will look like pale colored queens(still with the crown).

Turns out this Fish is not a Queen. I saw a much younger Queen at the LFS today. Much more Blue coloration to it's body, as well as much more Blue in it's face... My fish is a good 6 Inches at this point, it's body is bright yellow....

Mike from NY Aquatics doesn't seem to care that he sold me a Townsend by mistake.... Oh well...

As has been said that fish is a Townsend, but it has many markers that trend towards queen. These markers come about and strengthen with age, and while it is easy to tell the difference between a 100% juvenile queen and a 100% juvenile blue, on many of the juvenile townsend's it is near impossible. Therefore, in my opinion, you could not hold a retailer responsible on these fish when purchased small. Perhaps if you bought the fish a month ago, but not when it was small.

Just wanted to reply to my comments above. Mike from NY Aquatics does care and my comment about him not caring was a misunderstanding. He is a great retailer that has served me for many years, with great fish and great prices. I do not hold him responsible for this. While I am a tad upset I don't have a true Queen, my fish is healthy, eating and getting bigger by the day.... Thank You Mike....
