Question about Angelfish

So is it ok to have more than one Angelfish in a tank. I currently have 1 Dwarf Flame Angelfish in my 150G. I wish I could have other ones like Coral Beauty Angelfish for example.

So whats the rule? No more than 1 of Angelfish? Or No more than 1 of the same Angelfish?

Thanks.

read read read! the fish cant read so it doesnt alway apply but alot has to do with size of tank how you introduce them if it will work or not! just like tangs

When I was younger and dumber I had a 45 hex that was fish only with coral skeletons.. In it I had a rock beauty, coral beauty, and another dwarf I can't recall the name of. No issues with fighting or territories and I had them for years until I had to give the tank up due to time constraints.

In my later years with what I have read I would be led to beleive that it is not a good idea to do what I did. Unfortunately rules of thumb are sometimes proven and sometimes disproven.

Based on my prior experience I will probably add a flame angel to my 150 eventually and I do have a coral beauty currently in the tank.

The "rule" as I have read it is 1 dwarf angel not 2. As Adam stated, many have had different experiences (including myself). The larger the tank the better.

You'll have better luck if you introduce them at the same time. If you can't and it's FOWLR, then rearrange the rock work a little.

Whenever I add a new fish I always keep my lights off all day until I am ready to add and then I add the fish while the others are sleeping. Fish often find a place to hide right away and this way they won't claim someone elses house as their own since the owner will be home sleeping. I dont know if my theory works for that reason, but it seems to work for me.

i had two dwarf angels in my 29 gal. A flame and a pgymy. The flame was in there for over a year before I added the pgymy. The flame chased the pgymy like crazy for the first few days, after that they became friends.

i successful had a flame angel and a potters angel together in my 75g reef with no real trouble. the potter ocassionally chased the flame around but they got along good. that is until the summer disaster!!!! a few months ago when we had the 3 weeks of 100 degree days claimed their lives along with 2 barlett anthias :( it was a tragic day!

eddiebfl: sorry to hear about your loss.

All: thank you very much for all your invaluable responses. Now at least I know it is not an absolute NO NO to have two + angels in one fish tank. I will most likely add one soon.

Thanks again,

Lucas

I had a flame, coral beauty and bi-color in at the same time with no problems. But I also at one time tried a lemonpeel and a half black and the half black got bullied and died.

I think with your size tank if you have plenty of hiding spaces your chances are pretty good but not guaranteed.

2 things I've been told from multiple "experts" in my quest as I convert to FOLWR. I spent a fair amount of time on the phone with one of the main guys at LiveAquaria.

1. Introduce angels smallest to largest over time.
2. Keep only 1 of each genus...i.e. one centropyge, one Pomacanthus, one Holacanthus, one Chaetodonoplus (assuming you have a large enough tank for any one of them of course)....etc

I agreed with Mike on this one and it actually worked out for me really well. I have 5 angels fishes in my 135g tank right now, and soon I will move them to my 300g. But they are getting along well in the 135g.

The key thing for me is the new addition is bigger than all the existing ones.

I added Coral Beauty. It is being chased like crazy by Flame. I turned off the lights for the day to mitigate the problem somewhat. Coral Beauty does not have any fins chipped yet. I will give it couple of days and keep you posted.

The key to angels is having the right balance i have 11 angels in my 240 no fights no problems and the first one I added was the biggest a 12 inch queen then a 12 inch emperor. then a big french then a bluring flame coral buty and a bicolor the finally a cherub and a passer and a asfur.

All doing fine together and no fights now.

Much calmer today. The new comer, coral beauty, is not chased around as much. Actually I dont see her being chased at all. Still keeps hiding somewhat behind the rocks.

Update: Angels are getting along. No chasing around at all. Just so you know, coral beauty that was just added is only a bit larger than the flame I already have. They dont seem to bother each other at all.
