Question about fuge.

as long as there isn't a power head in that area i wouldn't see why not. however i would rid the bio-balls as that will create nitrates which you are tring to rid with the fuge.

I agree with removing the bio balls, you could replace with live rock rubble.

How are you going to get light to that section? Your macro algae is going to need a light source to grow.

Also, how do you like that sump? I had thought about getting the model 2 and modifying it, but am thinking I may just do DIY now.

I agee as well ditch the bio balls (slowly) 10 % per week and go with LR/Macros

I agree with the others but if you put rock then how could you get the light to penetrate to the macroalgae

the rock would be under the macro alage, and the way it looks all you need it a clip on lamp for a light

I have the same wet/dry and I am thinking of removing the bio-balls, the egg crate, the filter and the filter tray. I was then going to glue a piece of acrylic sheet with tons of holes in it in the area just left of the fill line sticker. This would create a large vertical section originally occupied by the bio-balls. Since cheato links to be rolled by water flow this would be perfect. It also still leaves the second section for the skimmer.

I am a newbie at this so anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

By the way what is the black equipment in the second stage now?

Or you can just do this. I will be adding macro to the middle section with a clip on light.

i don't think you'll get enough light penetration going from up top of the sump, try putting lights on either side of the sump, its not like ur growing coral or anything, and the lights being on the side means u aren't limited to clip lights.

Did you guys know that in wet/dry filters, the bioballs actually produce nitrogen gas, which doesnt enter the tank system? Anerobic bacteria doesnt produce nitrates which are found int water

actually bioballs do often cause nitrate problems because they trap detritus that rots in them and causes nitrates

I would replace the bioballs with base live rock. My lfs sells it for about 1/3 as their regular rock. It has the bacteria, just no coralline. Then make the section underneath your refugium. I would put the light where it shines right in the circle you drew on the picture (from the side, not above). I would leave the filter pad, but rinse it clean every week or so. It will only trap detritus from entering your sump, but leaving it too long will have the same effect of the bioballs--nitrate buildup from the detritus rotting. I guess you could use a filter bag instead of the filter pad too.
