Question about how many to use

I'm currently upgrading to a 105 4ft tank. I will be going sps dominant with a red carpet and a blue carpet, which I know do not like a whole lot of flow but the sps do. I'm for sure am going to be running one on the side of the tank with another namebrand of powerhead behind the rock for more flow, because I already have it, how many Vortech 40w should I get?

Depending on the capacity of your other powerhead, one may be enough, especially in the beginning. Ultimately two pumps will probably be ideal for once the SPS grow in. Place them both on opposite sides of the tank for max effectiveness.

Thanks, for the info. I already bought one Vortech 40W. The other powerhead capacity is 820gph. I want to put two Vortech's on the tank but i'm worried about the anemones.

I would recommend you use the foam guards and place the pumps well away from anywhere an anemone can get to them. Like with any powerhead, there will be some risk.

How do you use the foam guards?

you slide them around the pump to protect the intake. Each pump comes with one and they can also be purchased in packs of three.
