Question about hyposalinity

After reading many posts here about hyposalinity there is something that I dont understand and hopefully someone can clarify for me. I read that if fails to maintain the same low salinity then the whole process have to start all over again. I was thinking if 1.009 is the level that I want to maintain but one day I fail and salinity increases slightly to say 1.010. Isnt 1.010 still a low enough level that ich cannot live anyway? So if I then readjust it back to 1.009 would I be ok then?

Second question then is whether the range of salinity is 1.009 to 1.010 only in order for ich not able to survive? What about 1.011?

If salinity goes above 1.009 you start over period. Anything above 1.009 even for a minute will cause the ich life cycle to continue. This is why most of us don't use this process

I have used it several times with great success .. It is not that difficult in a large system to keep the salinity accurate I personally like hypo over cupramine any day of the week...

Either will work for ich, but tank transfer is better and easier for ich. Hyposalinity will not work for anything else and there is one variety of ich that is hyposaline immune.

Hi mate, so if salinity accidentically falls below 1.009, for e.g. 1.008, then it should be ok since it is at a lower level?

Well, sort of. But if you go much lower (such as if your measuring tool is not properly calibrated which is one of the risks of using hypo at all) you may damage fish due to osmotic pressure.

Everyone is using specific gravity to describe salinity..? presume when they say "do hypo at 1.009" they mean SG 25/25 ...ie SG=1.009 at 25 degrees with the hydrometer calibrated at 25 degrees...?
But if you dont use an hydrometer and have a refractometer what is 1.009 in real salinity measurement of PPT ..somewhere around 30..?

PS...just got the answer, nothing like 30 I guessed it is 11 to 12 ppt for anyone else interested.
