Question about yellow watchman goby

I've had frank for almost two years now and rarely seen him away from his area but right now, and seen this once before, he's swimming at the upper area of the tank. Is there any reason for this? Not saying it's bad he looks fine and water parameters are great across the board just wondering if theres any real reasoning for it ...

YWG, their a nutty fish. Personally I won't buy another as he kept going into the sump. His nickname was houdini. Ultimately must of committed suicide, as I never found him in the socks.

Do you have yours paired with a pistol shrimp? I have had mine for over two years. When it was in the 92G tank without a shrimp it hides all the time. There would be months between I see him I almost thought I have lost the fish. But ever since I paired it with a tiger pistol in a 180 and with proper hiding places I see it about every other day as it sits at the watch out for the shrimp.

He almost always stays in his spot that he dug out, he doesnt have a pistol shrimp. i bought one about two weeks ago a nice looking tiger pistol shrimp and as soon as i dropped him in the tank my checkboard wrasse had mistaken him for dinner, needless to say i wasnt happy and still plan on getting this wrasse out and getting another pistol

The only time mine swims away from his home is when I haven't fed the tank for a few days and he is really, really hungry. Otherwise he guards his cave and peeks out as us.

i think this must be the reason, i cut back my feeding a decent amount to see if i was feeding too much on my feeding days, apparently i wasnt :headwally: lol thanks guys!

In this picture he looks like he has fin rot and is a bit undernourished.
A goby swimming on the surface like this for extended time is always reason for concern as it is abnormal behavior for them.

the pic is a little deceiving due to lighting, he doesnt have fin rot, but i feel youre definitely right about the malnourished part. any suggestions for plumping him up some? i currently feed my tank krill and mysis. i also feed zoo and phyto for corals, and have triggerpods as well.

Did you deworm him when you got him? Gobies are notorious for intestinal worm infestation. The worst are the sand sifting ones.

ive never even heard of deworming a fish, just googled it and found a link to a forum on reef central so going to look into it today. thanks

also, the pics of him as i said...this spot where hes perched inbetween the mushroom and duncans is his normal place, hes got a cave built out from underneath and has lived there for about a year now and guards the entrance, one day when i get rid of this damn wrasse ill be picking up a new pistol for him

My YWG (Cuthbert) and his pistol (Roland) are a very private couple. Cuthbert only comes out when he's hungry and I rarely see Roland; occasionally his claws peeping out of the burrow if I use a flashlight at night. Cuthbert will swim out onto their "balcony" and stare at me when he's hungry but won't swim into the water column at feeding time. I drop pellets near the burrow but it's hit or miss on whether Cuthbert collects them.

To make sure they're fed, I deliver food to them (they don't even have to call or tip!) via the Foodevator(TM). It's just a rigid piece of airline tubing I stick into the hole that leads to the balcony and drop pellets down it directly into their burrow. Takes the pellets a minute to get down the tube but it ensures the Odd Couple is getting fed and protects the food from Gertrude, the pig disguised as a Starry Blenny (she'll try to attack the pellets on the way down)

Unfortunately as said before your Frank is really skinny. :( Since you've had him 2 years I don't know about parasites, but you should try to get some more food to him ASAP. Good luck!

thank you! i will start this process once i get home this evening, what type of pellets do you use?

New Life Spectrum or Formula One. They're not picky. :) You can use any food that won't get stuck on the way down and is heavy enough to sink.
