Question on specific gravity testing.

Still Learning
I have been taking SG readings for about 6 months now with a new refractometer recommended from Boomer on this forum. Everything is going well. I have a question on how much temp is affecting my readings. I am getting readings of 1.025. I have been keeping my tank under these conditions. My question is that I have been taking these readings at about 77F. Is my reading actually closer to 1.027 and not 1.025? Should I account for the 2 degree difference or that can be neglected?

Thanks

Many of the refractometers are automatic temperature adjusting. If yours is, you should not have to worry about it as long as the temperature is within reason. If not, there are charts you can use, which Boomer or someone else would need to provide this information. ;)

Thanks HighlandReefer. It is only 2 degrees off from the usual numbers. Just wanted to fine tune my system. Hopefully Boomer will chime in if I need a table or not. Thanks again.

Either way, with a refrac, what matters is the ambient temp, not the water temp that you are sampling from. After putting the drop on the crystal, you are supposed to wait for 30 seconds. This allows the water on the crystal to come to the same temp as the crystal itself. So the temp you are measuring at is the temp of the crystal. So you can test water that was any temp (within realistic limits) using the same non-ATC refrac so long as the ambient room temp is the same and you give some time for the water to equilibrate with the temperature of the refrac.

Disc1 as usual your the best. I guess you beat out Boomer on this one. Thanks for the info and the feedback guys. My biology days are well behind me.

Boomer: personal question so you don't have to answer. Are you military EOD?
I worked with EOD at Vandenburg AFB last year.

As far as I'm concerned, only Military is real EOD. So, yes I am/was, US Army EOD :)

Go Marines EOD.

I'm glad there are folks around to do that. If that kind of stuff fell to guys like me we'd all be blown to hades.

Boomer: I agree, but didn't want to insult you if you weren't. I was Spec Ops for about 7 yrs in the early 90s and you guys saved me more than once. Thank you if it was you. For whatever it's worth,

Lt. Col. Alex Carapeti, Retired

My new C.O. is my wife now. Thank you guys for all your knowledge of Reefs. Keeping a reef tank (or attempting to keep one) has been very therapeutic for me.

And for all of you who do what you do, you have my deepest gratitude.

:love1:

Thanks for your services to our country. I have a son in the Marines.

Don't shoot the messenger, special ops at that. :hmm4:

This was sent to me (with a photo) from a relative that is an Armory Lt. Colonel while sitting in one of Saddam Hussein's palaces after the 2nd Iraq invasion, smoking one of Saddam's cigars with his feet propped up on an expensive desk.

-------------------------------

"A young second lieutenant approached the crusty old first sergeant and asked him about the origin of the commissioned officer insignias.

"Well, LT, it's history and tradition. First, we give you a gold bar representing that you're valuable BUT malleable. The silver bar of a first lieutenant represents value, but less malleable. When you make captain, you're twice as valuable so we give you two silver bars.

"As a colonel, you soar over military masses, hence the eagle. As a general, you're obviously a star. That answer your question, LT?"

"Yeah, but what about major and lieutenant colonel?"

"Now, son, that goes waaaaaay back in history. Back to the Garden of Eden even. You see, we've always covered our p****s with leaves . . ."

--------------------------

Ya gotta love his sense of humor.

I have that hat too Cliff only I opted to have it not say "Senior" on it.

Col .Carapeti :)

Yes and I do not see how Law enforcement can wear a badge, ours, that they did not earn which is 6 m - 1 year of school, and must keep a C grade average. Their FBI HDS school, started by us, which we gave to the FBI in the late 70's, is 4 wks and no testing or grades. I wonder how they would feel if I took some LE classes for 4 wks, no testing or grades and walked in with their local Police badge on my chest claiming I'm a police officer. But I do respect them for what they do and understand them wanting our badge. Some have chosen not to do that and make up their own badge, use the IABTI badge or HDS badge. Military EOD is now considered Spec-Op's or Special Forces.
