Question - Sedra 5000

I have an ASM G3 with a Sedra 5000 on my 90 and over the last 4-5 months after a power fluctuation (which happens frequently in South Florida) my pump does not restart. It sounds like it is trying to but will continue to try until I intervene by either putting a couple of fingers in front of the volute/intake, interfering with the little bit of flow that is happening, or by blowing into the air tube. Either one of these actions will restart the pump.

I have the standard needle wheel impeller that came with the now 2 year old skimmer.

Is this the beginnings of pump failure or something else?

how often do you clean it, pouring water into the air intake? how often do you submerse it in vinegar/muriatic acid? The most often cause i believe is that there are deposits inside the venturi that cause it. Try giving it a good full cleaning.

It's not usually the pump failing.

I'm guessing by the 2 replies that I did not make my issue clear. It is the pump that is not restarting, much like Rios do. It makes a noise like the impeller is rattling around or it is trying to reverse. It is not that I am no longer pulling air.

I do clean the pump occasionally (1 or 2x per year) and regularly clean the venturi.

Hey Bob, hope all is well? (other than your pump issue)

i had the same problem with my sedra 3500, i got a new impeller and the problem continued, once i would turn it off it would not start flowing again and i would have too mess with it untill it would get going again so i finally had enough and got a new pump (used one actually) and no problems since.

i think (Have not tested the theory) the inside of the housing that is near the magnet of the impeller swells once it cools down after turning it off and does not permit it to turn thus causing the obvious problem of not restarting.

i guess the above statement is another way of saying exactly what Jessp wrote"then yeah it is your pump" :-)

I have the same problem....I asked this question before but could not get a clear answer even from the euro reef club guys... sucks..
