Has Pittsburgh ever done a frag swap? and If not I would like to know how to set one up. I might have a location If it could be mutually benifical to all.

Holeinone1972 held 2 at his house, there was another held at a firehall in West Mifflin, these were all years ago. So, yeah, it has been done, but not for awhile.

I think that this would be an awesome idea. I have an idea as to where we could hold one but I have to clear it first. Do you think there is enough interest to make this a great event.

I am looking at ideas in a fish flea market if you will buy sell trade what ever i just was putting out feelers to see if it would fly....It would be a sort of fund raiser for my local fire company. as well as a good way to get some exposure to the hobby.

I need the specifics on how to host one if anyone has a clue drop me a line. Do you charge for tables? that kind of info would be helpfull

Hosting a frag swap is alot of work :)

PMASI does take atleast two roadtrips each year to the All-Ohio Swaps. The next one is in March (Cleveland) We will probably be stopping at Salty Critter too.

no offense I don't care about a road trip my intention is to start something here that might bring people to us. I understand it might be a lot of work but what in life isn't work. what is alot of work? tell me what needs to be done so if its TOO much work I won't waste my time.

Basically the design of the frag swap is up to the particpants. My idea would be to not charge for tables but just enjoy the exposure to the hobby...I have some pull at a corporation that may be willing to host it...this would give the hobby a major boost in the community and could open the doors to some of those people who are thinking about it but not willing to make the leap.

so basically it is a free for all...entry price to get in the door or is that free as well....never heard of the concept something for nothing....

It depends totally on the motive of the host....if you are trying to get people interested then yes....something for nothing would be great....if you are trying to make a profit ...then charging is a great idea....however most people are opposed to a cover charge...unless you have to pay for a venue...

I was hopeing to get it as a fund raiser for my v.f.c. and maybe introduce the hobby to others. cover charge would be minium if any at all with possible refreshments and maybe a presentation if possible.. What ever anyone with experince in organizing one can help me come up with....Just trying to help my v.f.c. and maybe anyone else who might benefit

Alright I just cleared the idea with the corp. Petco at Century III would def be willing to host the frag swap for free. They would be willing to provide tables and such for the swap. So particpation would be free, which means that the only cost for the participants would be what they would be willing to buy while there.....is anyone interested in helping me organize this....I'm looking at a timeline of about 2 months.

thanks
Ed

I had a large ballroom facility that can handle about 70 some tables with a table fee of 10.00 each and an entrance of 5.00. stop me now if thats outrageousin either direction. I am just looking for help setting it up.

My deal just fell through...damn corporations.....Carpenter I would be willing to help you set up that frag swap....what is the timeline your looking at.

There are enough local clubs with some experience around that you don't have to do this all on your own. Don't try to re-invent the fragswap.

Check with the guys at NCPARS, their forum is here on RC.

They just held a pretty successful frag swap & have had several the last couple years.

Certainly look into using Fragswapper.com it's a great way to organize trades ahead of time.

As far as cover charge etc. I don't think the majority of people are in it to make a lot of money, so a low table fee coupled with a $10 entry for sellers, maybe $5 for lookers-on.

Good luck
Bill

I can try to answer any questions you may have, and I can help out if you need it too. Our swaps are twice a year with other little events and trips in between. Our swaps are larger than most with about 100 attendees. We made out pretty well with attendance, swapping, selling, and the raffle was a huge success.

LMK if you need anything or have any questions. If I don't have the answers I will be sure to get them for you.

thanks,

Rick

To make it profitable you would need a lot of donations, cheap hall rental and food, and speakers and things all paid for by vendors. To be quite honest, our swaps don't make money or a lot of money and we don't have to because we are a non profit. But if you get a lot of donations from people coming and you have a good attendance then yes you could technically make some money, not sure how much, but you may be able to pull in a couple hundred bucks.

In my opinion, the vendors make more money than the club does, as well as the hobbyists who sell things at the swaps.

Maybe it is just the way our swaps are laid out and prepared, but if you are charging everyone at the door, and can find someone to sponsor all the expenses, then yes you could do very well.

Give me some more information on exactly what your plan was and I may be able to better understand what you mean and tell you if its feasible. If you include a frag swap in some sort of existing flea market then it probably won't go so well, but if it is promoted at LFS all over Pittsburgh and the LFS donate stuff for a raffle or offer a discount, your attendance will go up.

thanks,

Rick
