Questions about H. Malu

He looks phenomenal tonight. He is probably about 7" wide and wrapped around that rock in the back.

If he stays healthy like this when should I feed him?

Give it a day or two looking good and not deflates, then feed him. Small pieces like 1/2 of an eraser head size would be fine.

On the move again. This time he is in the middle of the sand in the back corner. Appears to be inflated and anchored (not going to disturb him to see. Got a shot of the mouth. Looks heathy to me, may just be finding a home?

Is he upside down?

Yes he was upside down. I feel so stupid for not seeing that. He was very sticky when I turned him over. The mouth is tight and closed. I dug a little hole where he was and set him back in it.

Why/how did he flip? Thank you so much for helping me. People like you are why I come on this forum

I run my vortech mp10 via an apex so it switches modes a lot. For a few minutes after feeding and for an hour every night I run nutrient export mode at 80% to stir up the tank.

Since the malu is not attached to anything I believe it was getting lifted up and eventually flipped. I have shut off all nutrient export mode until it attaches and is firmly planted.

I am confused as to why it hasn't attached to anything yet. Overall (when right side up of course) it looks healthy to me.

Get a smooth concave rock (or a dead clam shell) and put it over his column, trap him under it. He will need to attach to the rock first before he can dig down into the sand. Without something to anchor him, he cannot dig down. Unless he have something to attached to to weight him down, it is really hard to dig down the sand. He may be sick that wan the season why he does not attach to the rock or the side of the tank. I would get treatment tank ready in case you need to treat him.

To clarify. You're saying to gently pin him down on the underside of the tentacles between the tentacles and foot? So would it be laying on its side?

Anemone moves. You don't want to crush or punture him with a sharp rock. That is why a concave smooth rock is needed. I try not to put the rock over the tentacles, but just the column of the anemone. However, even it you put the rock over his tentacles, he will just move out from under the rock. He will attach himself to the rock much quicker like this. If he continue not attached, then he is sick and need treatment with antibiotic.

Unfortunately it looks like this Malu is not going to make it. A few days after my last post he deflated overnight and never reinflated. I put him into QT with cipro and have followed the sticky thread in this forum. Tonight he still looks deflated, he's not sticky at all and the mouth is hugely gaping with protrusion of his guts. I dosed a final dose of cipro but if it still looks like that tomorrow I'll know it's dead.

I am done with anemones for a while. I've inexplicably lost this and an rbta in this same manner in this tank. I'm wondering if the anemones aren't getting what they need from my leds. Both have acclimated well, thrived for 3-4 weeks than deflated literally over night and died shortly after.
Either way I'm going to take a break from them for a while. So sad too because my clowns really like being in them.

I fed him frozen mysis that I thawed and rinsed just once. It was a while between my feeling and it deflating. It is a good suggestion to look into as I fed the same mysis to both and hadn't thought of that possibility. I have fed that mysis to my fish a lot without any ill effects

Fish with a brain can spit out spoiled, bad or food that they don't like. Anemone without brain will swallow anything that have certain chemical on it, they cannot tell if the food is spoiled or not. Spoil food are full of bacterial that will get them sick and kill them.
Bad seafood smell, really bad seafood smell real bad. If the food smell, don't feed it to your anemone. I only feed my anemones what I would eat. If I would not eat it, it does not go to my anemones.
I do feed Mysis to my fish, if the anemone catch it, they can eat it. I also rise my Mysis with tank water before I feed it to the tank.
