Questions before I buy

I also think when looking for a new controller, one of the best ways to decide is to look through the forums closely, look for what issues each controller may have, how many times do you see things like unit not working or things similar. One thing that is paramount is reliability with controllers for fish tanks. And I am also proud to say out loud this is one thing you really do not ever have to worry about with profilux, just search through this great forum.

Also look at the support network, this is also important, here you have full access to not only the distributor but also the manufacturer himself, who is also the developer.

Best of luck in your quest and please feel free to ask any question that comes up. if you have any more technical questions please post and ask as much as you need to.

The lack of "problem posts" on this forum is a big reason for my considering the Profilux. This controller would be the most expensive option of the three I am considering. I couldn't create any Programmable Logic in Demo mode, I could only get to the screen for it...so I couldn't play around with it. Is there documentation outlining how it works available?

Also, your controller works differently then others in many areas. For instance with Temperature it looks like I'm either heating or cooling...and I don't use a "bottom heater"...so I'm still trying to understand the logic on how it turns things on and off...but also with regards to cooling....I currently run an ACII and turn on fans at 80 degrees F and the Chiller on if it hits 82 degrees....how would I do that with Profilux?

Yes I am "shopping" controllers...RKE, Aquatronica, and Profilux

Hiya

its really good to shop around first, this is one choice you cant rush.

The temperature control is a full enviromental control interface, you program the temperature you wish the tank to be kept at and also program an offset if so desired and of course important when using a chiller as you dont want to get into a "bounce" effect with the compressor switching to often.

So set you desired temp and then program two sockets, one for heat and one for cool, the system will then react accordingly to your sytems enviroment and keep you tank within your set parameter. Dont worry about the bottom heater, this is more an option for substrate heaters used in planted tanks, but does show how versatile the ProfiLux is.

To really play with the profiLux software and to really get into the useage of the P logic you do need to have a ProfiLux up and running, this is becuase the commands need to be uploaded to the controller so the programming can be enabled. Also on a security note it stops other controllers easily copying the very advanced functions profiLux offers. I actually do not know of another controller that even gives you demo access to be honest, could be wrong though.

Another thing to remember is the ProfiLux software is 100% free of charge and as you can see comes with a huge live support network.

Going back to the P logic for you, everything you wish to do the profiLux will do and we can help you get it set up, Lorin is the Guru on this, i bow my head to his knowledge of this side of the software. So you have a great support to fall back on.

If you really want to have a live play then come to Macna, we have the system show cased there and you also can pick up a unit if you so choose.

As for expense, dont be fooled, look closely what you get for your money with the profiLux then add up how much you would have to spend with others, also some others dont even offer anywhere near the advancements found here. The starting price is as little as $649.00, yes maybe $50 more expensive than another but is that the price you pay for extreme German engineering and huge technical advancement that wont let you down? Only you can decide what that is worth.

Irrelevant of what contoller you go for, the best of luck in your research and hope we can help you further

I agree Michael.... there were ALOT more tabs and options to work with once I got my unit up and running than in the demo mode....

builderguy, Start a post to see if there are any profilux users close to you (im sure theres a ton in CA) and go check it out if you can.... Once you see how they setup and run things I think you'll have a much better appreciation for everything that can be done with these controllers...

Web style, not at this time, BUT my little finger is telling me that is coming in a VERY VERY VERY near future. Always keep in mind that you can connect using the software from anywhere in the world if your house network is up to par (appropriate port routing).

So to recap
with the software no problem
via the web not yet.

And when the web part is available, it will be via the software and directly from the unit itself.
That means that the software has to be opened and connected to the profilux and the you log into the software via the web

Very cool...I like that.

I still haven't been able to play with "Programmable Logic" in the demo mode...it just allows me to view the tab not the options...what have I got wrong...I'd really love to be able to play around with it.

As michael previously mentionned the demo mode is limited and you would be able to play with it much.

Oh...what about the cables for dimming Ice Cap 660's? Where can I get those that would work on L1-L4?
Icecap is not a ballast that uses a 1-10v interface therefor is not dimmable by profilux.

PS Even with the approved dimmer for icecap, I have heard horror stories.

Ice cap are not dimmable with ANy controller, they have not gone down this route yet, but GHL do supply dimmable ballasts that work directly with profiLux, for 54watts.
