Questions- Coralife 96W powerquad and RO system??

Ok I have a question on the 96W Coralife Powerquad and the Coralife 3 canister RO system.

Powerquad Lighting:
When I first purchased this light over a year ago I did research and somehow came up with this light as being the best option for my 10 gallon tank as it would let me do a variety of different things. (It is 50/50 bulb) Now that I have been talking to people on other boards they are telling me that 9.6W/Gallon is way too much for most easy corals such as mushrooms. They are telling me that I should therefore not keep easy or low light level corals.

Is this true? Is this light too much? Is there anything I can do to still use the light but reduce its emissions?

My current mushroom coral is fully extended and open when the light is on. However when I purchased the coral it was a greenish color in the store. It was also not fully extended but definitely green. Now it has become a brownish-red color. I have read that this means the coral is getting too much light. But if that is true why is the coral still fully extending still???

Coralife RO System:
This system is 3 cartridge and TFC membrane. Carbon/1 Micron Filter/Deionizing cartridges and the TFC membrane at the top.

For some reason my phosphate reading out of the system is around 0.5ppm. Does that seem high? I would think in this type of system you should be seeing almost no phosphate out of the RO system?

Hi Jasno,

The only time that level of light causes problems is when the coral is first introduced into the tank. You want to acclimate it slowly by placing some screening between the water and tank or raising the lights higher than normal away from the tank. After acclimation it should take the full intensity without major problems.

On the RO, I'm not really sure what is wrong. Does it have a post DI carbon cartridge? If so remove that as it is not needed and could be the source of the phosphates

No the DI cartrige is the last thing in the setup.

As for lighting am I ok if my mushroom coral is turning brownish in color????

I have the same 96w quad on my 16 gal cube w/ at least 4" of sand so the light is 12-13 inches off the sand. Have had great luck with mushrooms, zoos, alveapora (spelling?) and anthelia, torch coral. Everything is awesome in color.

Cool. So what about the fact that my mushroom was greenish when I purchased it and now it has turned to a brownish color??

What does that mean? What shoudl I do to fix that?

I think that many reefkeepers don't know that a coral's/corallimorph's photosynthetic Zooxanthellae are actually brown in color. Under the high wattage it maybe that they are increasing in numbers, which accounts for your observations. I still won't worry about it at this point but you can try the window screen trick and see if it helps out.

Ok I use4 a half of a glass top on the lid of the tank to help cut down on light.

How do you know if bleaching is occuring? Does the mushroom actually turn white or do parts turn white.

By the way here is a picture of what things currently look like. Not the best but it is somehting:
