we have a empty 20 gallon glass tank and were woundering what whould be the largest species of mantis shrimp we would be able to keep. ALso are there any special requirements for certain species. Thanks.

I would check out Roy's List at the top of the page. It should have all of the information you are looking for. What i would do if i were you is just find out what species you can get your hands on. I have had trouble finding LFS's that carry them, and when they order they have trouble matching certain species.

20G tank would hold a spearing species that gets about 4" long comfortably, and a smashing species that reaches about 3", because once you get over that...lets just say the risk increases for finding water all over your floor

You can double-check with Dr. Roy, but an Odontodactylus havanensis would do just fine -- very little risk of breaking glass. To be extra-careful you can put a layer of acrylic on the bottom of the tank.

A spearer like P. ciliata would do great in a 20.

As far as "special requirements", most common mantis species like "ideal soft coral with inverts" conditions -- excellent water parameters, moderate flow, moderate (PC fluorescent) lighting. They tend to be messy eaters, so a refugium is a good idea, but not necessary. I put skimmers on my mantis tanks; YMMV. The Odontodactylids (and other large species) like PVC caves to lurk in. That's about it!
