I was wondering if there was a way to tell what tank size that invertebrates need. What I'm wondering is if there was a rule like the one heard a while ago like 1 inch of fish equals so many gallons do invertebrates have such rule? I go to Live Aquaria often and see lots of interesting squat crabs and so on but they don't tell you the minimum tank size for them.

i've got quite an assortment in a four gallon vase, as long as your inverts are not aggressive towards each other, and your water is correct, i can't see a minimum being an issue.

So most can be kept in any size tank as long as the water is good quality and they are feeding?

what size tank do you have (or are planning to have)? you can pretty much have however many inverts you want, to a point. you wouldn't want to put so many in that they starve if your tank is fairly new. some inverts eat fish poo, others eat algae, others scavenge for leftover food.

There is no tank size for this or that invert, (though I wouldn't keep an arrow crab in a goldfish bowl..) as long as nothing is territorial, and if they are have enough room to establish another territory, then there's room for it. Food supply is another factor, but that's mostly just for stars, nudibranch, etc as crabs/most shrimp you can feed.

Thanks. I thought that inverts didn't have any special tanks size needs, besides being able to have territory and getting a bite to eat, just wanted to make sure I was correct. I am planning a 29 gal with a 20 gal long sump FOWLR if all goes well maybe some corals later on. Thank you all for your replies!

Most crabs need some space to move around. Other than that, they're fine if they have a territory and clean water.
Cleaner shrimp need very little room because they just hang out in one spot, for example.
Squat lobsters/crabs are very small creatures. They'd probably be happy in a 5g or so. In fact, a nano tank with maybe just a nano fish or two would be a great habitat for squat lobsters.
