quietist ATS??

Hey guys I'll post this here is hope of ppl jumping on board as both the ATS stickies might not be the place for it.

so I would like to know what is the quietist ATS now I know there are so many factors but lets open up a discussion about it.

UAS, waterfall, turbo style box etc.
tank will be in my bedroom and would like to go skimmer less if i can. if not no biggie.

I'll be following - I'm in the process of trying to design an ATS for an SPS frag tank (also skimmerless) and one thing I can't stand from an aquarium is noise!! I'm staying away from up flow (bubbles = noise). So far probably going to use a waterfall style with the bottom of the mesh submerged and using overflow water so no added pump noise or hassle, placed inside a small closed trash bin or food storage container.

yeah I was thinking that as well. but i do like the open space an up flow gives you.
I remember reading a while back alot of the UAF noise all depends on how far you place it from the top of the water line...but I cant remember. maybe i'll fire the one i made up and see...

I think its mostly about how you design it. Personally, having mucked around with many designs, the waterfall works better than most. In an enclosed box, with the screen bottom just submerged, it's very quiet.

I also run mine off one of the siphon drains from the main tank, so no noise there either.

My current ATS version is single-sided 5" x 12" screen on a 25 degree angle lit be four Expression 9w LED bars. I us a spray bar instead of a slot pipe to control the water flow distribution flow across the screen face. The screen slides out for cleaning without removing the spray bar for easy and rapid cleaning. The bottom of the acrylic containment housing is just below the sump water level. Quietest yet. The angle of the screen promotes water contact along the length and width of the screen without gurgling or splashing noise and I use a smaller powerhead on a 5" screen but get very even flow by just adding a hole or two to the spray bar. The tank sits next to the couch in the den and I can't hear it run at all.

It's funny, I had to rig up an ATS in my display tank very quickly as a baffle broke in my sump and took it offline and the sump ATS was my only source of nutrient export. Ironically, my ghetto ats is almost silent, only noise is the small fan on the led heatsink...

It produces well considering there is no waterfall or UAS, it just sits in the water at the edge of the tank. Now also keep in mind that I only have fish in the tank currently too, so the load is not so high.

Crusinjimbo do you have pictures?

My scrubber is a waterfall style lit on both sides. Fed with the drain from my display tank. Screen touches the bottom of the containment box, and the drain is at 45* angle into the sump, so there is very little noise. My skimmer is much louder than the scrubber setup. Trying to post a pic but photobucket is offline right now...

could you explain a little ca1ore on your design I really like it just a little confused on the build as how to clean scrren water input etc thx

Sure, water comes in through the white union/black bulkhead into the T bar with a bottom slot and flows down the screen. Screen is attached to the bar with four plastic clips (made form gray PVC a size bigger than the bar). Entire bar/screen assembly can be removed to scrape the screen. I subsequently replaced the top plastic cover with a glass one due to excessive warping.
