Quoyi parrotfish reef safe?

My shrimp didn't disappear until my parrot had settled for a few weeks, so I had a false sense if security with it. Still not 100% sure it was him... I still have one cleaner and the CBS.
 
I have 3 cleaner shrimp an many snails, none of which get a 2nd look from my Quoyi. Being that they only like small pieces of food most inverts should be unappealing to the parrot. Mine won't eat small pieces of krill or silversides so I don't worry much about my shrimp. My shrimp are roughly 5xs the size of my one cleaner goby that was killed and he took a very small chunk out of him. Point is your shrimp should be fine but like Rea17 mentioned, shrimp disappeared so each fish is different. IMO well worth the risk of a couple 20$ shrimp or 40$ in the harlequin sake
 
I think with mine, it's that he likes to explore things. Soft-bodied shrimp don't do too well with that :( I've seen him play with frag plugs (corals attached), and move them all over the place. I had a nice rainbow pectinia frag that was happy as a clam on my sand bed, one morning it was up on my monti cap at almost the highest point in the tank. It didn't do well after that incident. Best I can say is to take precautions. If you don't want it to move, glue it down!

Also Cedz, I wouldn't put a peppermint shrimp in qt with yours. With how you say he acts around feeding time, he might think he's getting a live treat. I'd worry about accidentally training him onto live shrimp :P
 
Interesting that people have been keeping them safely in reef tanks. I just got back from snorkling at Ningaloo reef in Western Australia, and there were roving packs of them chowing down on various SPS corals.

What kind of parrot did you see? The scarus is normally reef safe...

Come to find out that it was hopefully curiosity that had her playing with my hermits. I dropped 2 more in there, and she hasn't shown one bit of interest in them. It was either over-exuberant curiosity or the fact that she's getting full on pellets now that made her loose interest in hermits (for now, anyway. i'll continue to monitor...).
 
Is the parrot getting to the clip at all? He looks like a spunky little thing! He'll need to be competitive to keep up with those big guys.
 
I'd recommend using multiple clips at the same time. Those bruisers are intimidating!

My Quoyi seems to like pellet food the most. Goes crazy when I drop it in the tank..

Are you feeding seaweed extreme pellets? He will still need an algae-based diet. I like to feed the purple Julian Sprung seaweed because of how readily it comes apart. It makes a mess but the smaller, less competitive fish get to eat it out of the water column while the big guys are preoccupied with the clip. Once the clip is gone (usually takes 1-2 minutes) they clean up whatever is left floating around.

That's the seaweed I use too. Yeah I have algae pellets that he goes nuts over.. I have thick layer of algae on the rocks and bottem of the tank that the Quoyi likes to scrape too..
 
Ooo, and extra large terminal phase male coming on LADD today. I'll be interested to see how it looks compared to mine.
