Rabbitfish Fan Club - come all who love Siganus

One-spot should be fine. They stay smaller, so a 4' tank should be ok for it. I have a lot of LPS in with my Magnificent Foxface, and no issues at all. Mine does not care to much for bubble algae however.

Here's my Magnificent Foxface.

Took me a long time to find one under 5 inches, he's around 3-4 inches right now.

He hangs out with my yellow tang all the time, always looking out for each other. Probably my favorite fish in my tank.

Thought I would share a pic of how mine has grown since I got him. Top pic is in May 2013 and bottom is from September 2013. Compare him to the yellow tang who has also grown quite a bit.

My Magnificent will not "target" bubble algae, but if he knocks off a bubble while grazing, he usually eats it in the water column. There has been a good reduction in bubble algae in my tank since its introduction either way.

I never saw the rabbitfish eat bubble algae... but I used to have a bubble algae problem, added the rabbit, and now I don't.

My onespot will pick at some bubble algae; if I knock some loose, he'll eat it out of the water column. I had a really bad outbreak of the small clustering type and gave up on trying to get all the bubbles out without popping them. Now with the one spot and my manual removal/scraping, the bubble population seems to be declining.

I also think the rabbitfish is interesting... but the venomous part has made me nervous. How do you clean your tank or pick up a fallen piece of rock? How do you do TT to eradicate ich with a rabbitfish?

ANY rabbitfish you would recommend for a 50 gallon tank?

Their back spines are venomous, but they aren't aggressive. I stick my hand in my tank all the time no problem, it's not like it's going to come after you. The thing you have to watch out for is they like to camouflage themselves and hide really well... so if I was moving around some LR I would definitely want to keep track of him, dont want to accidentally grab a "rock" that isnt.

I did TT on my rabbitfish before he went in the display. I transferred him using a breeder box.

Unfortunately I wouldn't house any rabbitfish in a 50 long term. They get pretty big, even the smallest get ~8".

I have gotten stung and it was bc he was choking on a huge piece of nori. When he started having trouble breathing I was able to grab him. I knew it was a mistake, but I couldn't let him die and I don't have a net that big. He never tries to sting me on purpose.

Not sure about one in a 50 g. Definitely not the type I have, yellow blotch. He is over a foot long.

Lsufiregal - so how bad was the sting? What is the remedy? I also am setting up a 75 gallon in the basement that I am sure I will upgrade if I can manage the 75 w/ water changes... so not entirely worried about a fish outgrowing a tank.. however I do remember how painful it is to catch a fish in a tank w/ liverock....

It was pretty bad bc I had an allergic reaction to it. It was very painful but soaking it in extremely hot water helped. I will add that he grew from about 3.5 inches to 14 inches in 6 months....

My newest addition. A small yellow blotched rabbitfish to join my foxface and scribbled that are huge. I was worried they would pick on him but he's so much smaller but he's eating on the Nori clip with them like a Boss

We just picked up a 5" Foxface Lo from a LFS that had him for two months. No one wanted to buy him. He had some great yellow/white/black colors, and I've been watching him. Unfortunately he doesn't do well with the stress and went white/tan/black and looks like heck right now. I'll snap a pic when we get him in the DT in a month...

Aside from the nori, and algae waffers, what is good to feed them? I saw the comment about putting romaine lettuce on the nori clip, and then slowly slide a nori in there after a while to get them feeding on it. That's a great idea.
