rainford goby update

Our little guy is doing great: eats like a pig. We were worried about his 'hollow' belly, but his actual stomach seems to be ahead of that narrowing. I posted him as a good-natured wrasse lookalike for a nano-tank, but someone correctly alerted me to his 'hard to keep' status. I have a tank successfully growing sps and lps and a clam, and he's in with nanofish like firefish and a ywg and a mandarin. I'm pretty sure he's eating pods as well as cleaning sand. But he's healthy and thriving.
His other names are Old Glory Goby or Court Jester Goby, because of his stripes. He's about an inch long, and nobody messes with him. He was extremely shy at first, but now comes to the glass quite readily. Pays no attention to flake or pellets, just his business on the sand.

hey man, i have my own rainford gobi............. i too heard of their hard to keep status after i purchased it :( so far so good though! ive had him over a month and he seems to be happy and healthy... hopefully it stays that way!

Thanks for posting about your Rainford Goby, Sk8r. I am probably going to purchase one later today to add as a sifter for my 55G reef tank. It is well established and has plenty of live rock and pods. And I feed plenty of good frozen foods, like mysis and cyclopeeze, so I think he'll do great.

I've watched him in the store for a while. It looks healthy, plump, and was sifting sand.

Any particular tips?

Kind of an old post but I thought I'd chime in regarding the belly. That skinny spot is his belly, so he is a little skinny but mine looked like that also 2 years ago. Today he is so fat it almost looks unhealthy. In 2 years he has doubled in length and probably trippled in thickness :D

These guys are possible to keep alive but you really need a sandbed with fine sand, mine has never taken prepared food.

Clord, sorry to hear that. What type (size) of sand do you have? I think the rainford gobys do best with sugar fine sand, like southdown for example.

Good news Sk8r....hope he continues to do well and fill in some more! :)
