Rainfordia opercularis on LA today!!!

No offense to the person behind the camera @ LA/DD. But the picture is just blah... It does nothing to sell this fish.

Shhhh don't draw attention to that, maybe if it doesn't sell anytime soon they'll mark it down like 1000% and I can buy it.

It's one thing to buy a Personatus angel for 15 grand, but there's something about buying such a small fish for a few thousand that doesn't do it for me. Plus I agree on the picture, doesn't do the fish justice.

What's the story on these fish? Why are they so expensive?

I'm the last one to cry about a fish being unreasonably expensive.... but I just don't understand why this specific fish commands such a high price.

Depth of capture? Area of Capture?

yeah found i think 100+ meters below surface. found in an area far away from normal collection. so just add up the costs of gas tanks and boat fuel. :hmm4:

The video in this thread makes it better looking then DDs pic. I love the flathead on it! If money wasn't an object I would buy it. Since I work retail I will never see this fish in my tank :lmao:

Hi - wanted to address the issue of the photo. We agree it isn't the best photo, but the fish is very reclusive, and we did not want to stress him out with lights and making him come out for too long. It is a really amazing fish and we hope to have some video available soon.

There have been several posts on Reef Builders website regarding the fish and its rarity if you want to do a google and look up more info. The fish isnt for your average aquarium keeper, that is for sure - but it is great to see available for somebody in the US, rather than just Japan.

Very true. An angled shot of the head looking towards the bottom right corner would bring out the true exotic shape.

I do not think that's a fair representation of the fish. Every deep water fish is somewhat reclusive, especially the smaller species.

The person who buys this fish, probably isn't going to go and drop it in a 400 gallon aquarium stocked to the brim with Tangs, Angels and other boisterous fish.

Just like the Liopropoma species of fish, with due time they will all become more open and free going. It's something that likely won't happen at a holding facility (DD's) no matter how well it's cared for.

A DD employee describes this fish as "very reclusive". That's all I need to hear. I was thinking about buying this fish, but now.....
