Raised bumps on Blue Tang

Hi Everyone,

I need some advise - we woke this morning to find raised black bumps on our Hippo Tang. This photo was taken by a fellow reefer and I found the tread on Google. This is what our tang currently looks like. He was perfect last night when the lights went out and we woke to this.

Any and all advise or info is greatly appreciated!

Photo found in comment below.

It's not "black ich" or lymph. Could possibly be the start of HLLE, though I don't believe that either. Is it in a tank with corals and anemones? Looks like a sting more than likely

You know, that's why I finally posted here after researching all day. Nothing lined up perfectly with the research on Lymph or Black Ich. I read about HLLE too but that doesn't fall into place either? Sorry that I posted in the wrong section. We are newbies here (and to forums all together) and I'm signed in using my husband's account. I promise to do better next time. :)

At any rate, yes, the corals we currently have are Toxic Frogspawn, Montipora Plating and Pulsing Xenia and a few small Zoa frags. I read somewhere, during my hours of research that it might be a sting from a coral. I couldn't find anything else on the subject, just one simple forum feed so my research was short lived on that topic.

Would love to hear more! Thanks again!

So, all of these weeks later, we are still fighting the problem. There are no more raised bumps, only black bumps and black lines in the scales. He's been in the QT for three weeks and doesn't seem to be getting better. The QT is treated with copper but we've purchased some Cupramine and think we should give that a try. I posted another thread this morning but have no replies. Desperate for help, we really want to save this little guys. I will copy and paste this mornings thread.

This mornings post:

Black ick or HLLE? Please help!
Nearly 6 weeks ago we awoke to raised black bumps on our Hippo Tang, the night before... he was perfect. After researching and seeing that all of the other fish were doing fine, we left him in the DT until about three weeks ago when he stopped eating.

He's now been in QT for 3 weeks and though we have not actually seen him eat, we know he must be consuming something or he would have died a long time ago. We are feeding Formila flakes in the AM and garlic mysis in the evening. We are also leaving garlic Nori in the tank as well.

Again, we have researched nearly every forum and have read about all there is to read on Black Ick and HLLE but we haven't gotten the answers we need. Should we leave him in QT with copper? Shoot, we aren't even sure what we are fighting here! Most photos online are very blurry and we can't tell if they fit his problem or not. The water parameters are nearly perfect and the nitrates are between 5-10ppm. We've done water changes, nearly 50% a few days ago and this morning his black spots seem worse and though they are no longer raised like a welt, he has black lines through his scales.

We just need someone with some experience to please help us get our fish well again. He wants to go back into the DT and live a "Happy Hippo Life."

Thank you in advance.

Do not treat with copper unless you're sure of what your fish has. Copper is very hard on fish and some more than others. If in the case of treating ich it's better to do the TTM than anything and it's much less harmful and stressful to the fish being treated. We need to see some pictures of your fish.

Do a search in the tab above for HLLE and you will find lots of reading material on the subject

In addition to the foods you're feeding I highly recommend getting NLS pellets. Fish love them and it's IMO and IME the best pellet food on the market.

Black ich is is a worm and is treated with PraziPro. It took about 3 weeks for the black spots to clear on my yellow. For HLLE good nutrition. Soak food in Selcon. Offer nori daily and feed high quality frozen meant for tangs. once the black ich is gone for a couple weeks they should be good to go, assuming nothing other than HLLE Is also going on. HLLE doesn't require QT.

Thanks, I thought that is what I had read. Anyone that has one of those fish should be told about this when they're purchased since it's a common problem. But that will never happen.

Thanks all, I'll post updated photos when I get home. Perhaps we should drain tank and use only saltwater without the copper. Haven't heard of TTM but the concern is we are treating for ick with copper and there's no improvement. When pictures were posted at the beginning of this thread most replies were related to ick. The Frogspawn was a thought too but she's been out of the display tank for three weeks so we are sure now that wasn't the cause.
