Raising a Bimac Inklet (journal)

whats his current size? he's so small I wonder if one like him be ok in a reef. Granted small fish and inverts would not last.

He's about the size of a baseball. Most bimacs get a good amount bigger, so we shall see what his final size is. He is 9 months old.

He's a cold water species, so I have a temperate reef. He lives with sea anemones, mussels, starfish etc. There is one blenny in the tank that is living on borrowed time, lol. He will only eat live food, so I'm constantly replenishing his crab supply.

I just stumbled upon this thread, what an amazing opportunity to raise him. Great pictures btw.

Wow, he is so cool. How does he get the hermits out of their shell? Does he just stick one of his arms in there and yank them out?

He doesn't eat hermits anymore (too small), but when he did I assume he sucked them right now. :) He eats shore crabs and mussels now days. The shore crabs he grabs and pierces with his beak. It's pretty gross, lol

OK, Here's a Kermie video! Hopefully it works. He spent all day trying to get this crab with no luck. But this morning I came down and he was successful! :)

Don't you worry about him getting injured trying to eat the crab?

Excuse my ignorance because I know nothing about Bimac Inklet, but how does he feed? Do they release some sort of toxin to kill their prey?

Nah, the worst the crab could do is pinch a tentacle.

Yes, he releases a nerve toxin and then drills in. It's pretty gross, lol

gorgeous little guy! once i get some experience under my belt I may try one of these on for size! think it would be cool to keep such an interesting, intelligent creature.
