Randon pics...feedback welcome

I'm still new to the SLR world, so feedback is welcome. Here are some random pics I've taken with my Canon Rebel XTi. The following were taken with the stock EFS 18-55 lens.

I'm still working on my macro shots with my macro lens (100mm f/2.8).

Thanks for looking and any advice is much appreciated.

That's actually a pretty good start. On the macro shot you might want to raise the ISO so that you can use a higher aperture number (smaller opening) to increase the depth of field.

Mostly, it's just practice. No one needs to know how many shots didn't turn out. ;)

Cheers

Thanks, Doug.

Hehe, I took about 170 shots to get 15 that I thought were decent. I'm just happy to get a shot of my blue tang that isn't blurred--I was never able to accomplish that with my various point-and-shoot cameras.

Those look really good Les. And I am about the same ratio of pictures taken, pictures usable.

I have found that fish are some much harder to take compared to corals -- that darn moving around thing.

nice job Gawain1974. the clam macro looks good. you've done a great job getting some .you pics are a bit soft however. a bit of photoshop magic can help with this a bit. always best however to get the shot in the camera :)

try shooting in continuous mode a fire off a heap of shots. i assume you've shot at ISO1600? also try at f/3.5. you'll get more light but wont be able to focus as tightly.

Thanks Todd and bdepp. Bdepp, what do you mean when you say that the pics are a bit "soft" (sorry, still new to all the terminology). I'll try changing the f-stop to f/3.5.

by "soft" i mean they are a bit blurry on the egdes and arn't as sharp as i think you'd like. the 18-55 is a softer lens anyway. you might want to use the sharppen tool in photoshop to help with the blur a bit

Thanks, and you're right, the pics aren't as sharp as I'd like. I'd like another 'all-purpose' lens that would be sharper, but I have no idea as to where to start, lol.

Les,

While the lens has a lot to do with it, nearly every image could use some post processing. Ansel Adams didn't take his film to Costco. ;)

Learning to properly use Lightroom, Photoshop or both can drastically improve your images.

LOL, fair enough. Figuring out photochop has been a slow process for me, almost as slow as figuring out all the buttons on my camera. Adjusting the color is the hardest for me since I'm colorblind...I think something looks great, and then someone else says 'WTH were you thinking?' ;)

That is right, forgot that you are colorblind. I just started using a free trail of Lightroom, and I am having a hard time adjusting the color, and I am not colorblind. What I have been using is the color temp adjuster, wonder if that would work better for you.
