Randy's new 120 gallon Reef

I should have said most ozone run tanks ive seen have this problem, not all of them which is certainly not true :)

Do you think bromine from ozone could bypass the carbon? Maybee the molecule is too big for the carbon you use? Or it gets filled up too fast with discoloration orgaincs and has no room left for bromine.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that. :)

In my case, the fish is very bright yellow still and has no other apparent issues, but it is likely the same problem that is mentioned in the article, whether that is HLLE or not.

"There is some question as to whether or not these atypical instances in yellow tangs can rightly be called MHLLE. And, I will freely admit that since we don't know for sure what causes MHLLE, we also cannot say for sure that these disfigured yellow tangs are suffering from the same thing. But, in my opinion and that of others (Hemdal, 2003), it would be awfully strange if they were not related. The common factor being that fish held in captivity, in many instances in sub-optimal environments, develop tissue erosion of one type or another."

setup of 120?

setup of 120?

Randy,
I have the same tank size and I see alot of post and missed a setup.
If you have time please tell me as to know what do you have as a setup as sump, lights, pumps and so on.
And what supplement setup you are using as cal,alk and so on for the water.
And your weekly maintence schedule.

I using limewater.
2-250 mh 2- actinic vho
2- 1200 power heads for movement
1- mag 5 for sump movement
ASM g-3 skimmer

I know you are out maybe some has are can show me your setup and there setup too for ideas?

I think most of the setup is covered in posts in this thread. :)

Randy,
I looked at all the posts and here is what I saw and do you still do all of this?

Dose unsaturated limewater to replace evaporation but how much to use us to mix?

Water Change water you use IO salt and boost Cal and Magnesium as to what numbers for Cl and Mag levels?
also how often for water changes?

Dose Silica with what and what level?

Do Ozone?

Yes, I still do all of that.

I replace all evaporated water with about half saturated limewater. I measure its potency by conductivity (usually 4-7 mS/cm) and it varies a bit with the season, since evaporation changes too.

I change 1% daily, with Io boosted by 70 ppm calcium with Dowflake and 150 ppm magnesium with MAG flake (or once in a while, Epsom salt). I do not measure the values, I just add a calculated amount each time.

I dose silicate to a particular level (say, 1-2 ppm) and then it drops back over a few days to a week, or even longer if I'm away, before i dose again. I do not try to hold it at a particular value. It disappears completely in a few days.

The limewater that is pumped out by the reef filler pump into the sump in and out the changed 1%IO water by second reef filler pump?
OR is it a muti head pump or one pump for each item?

Happy Reefing. :)

Randy,
I am sorry I see it on the one post how you have dual head reef filler pump for water changing in new IO and out with old.
and one head pump for limewater.

The reef filler pump needs to replace pump tubes alot?
Also the water changing what you do is better then changing whole 10-25% at one time?

It is automatic and unstressful (for me and the tank) to change 1% per day. The overall effect on the water chemistry is similar to one big change per month.

I'l not sure what you mean by pump tubes, but if the keep the pump clean, it seems to last pretty well (although some other folks have had less success with them than I).

Randy,
Some of the dosing pump I saw on sites have short tubes that you have to replace the tubes wear out from the arms pushing the water out the tube.
I did not know if the limewater will hard up and hold on the walls of the tubing.

I think you are referring to peristaltic pumps, which may need the tubing replaced periodically. The Reef Filler is not that type, and does not have tubing to replace.

FWIW, I purchased a litermeter a couple years back and the short tubing that was on it was used at that time and I've never changed it yet. Or even cleaned it for that matter despite even having run my resevoir low a number of times to where it was pumping sludge. I just refill the container and let it run some ro/di before mixing in the kalk to make sure it's not clogged.

DrBC,
Were did you buy it?

Love the stand design. Personally I would have chosen cherry or mahogany for the wood. The crown moulding desigh definately adds a touch of class to the setup. I cant wait to see it when the tank matures.

Ok so im an eeeediot. The photo I was looking at was almost 2 years ago. Now that ive seen more recent photos it looks great. i still stick to my wood choice though. Looks like you have it in an old victoian style house judging by the woodwork on the doorways and the high celings.
