Rarest Chalice?

While I have seen a chalice that looks alot like the Mi Miami (and want it too), it is not the same, as only one piece of the Mi Miami was brought in and it was not split. Besides natural fragging incidents, I believe all chalices in the wild are genetically different. So, pretty safe to say there are only 3 people with this specific coral. Usually not the case, but there are exceptions.

Could have been 4 people with "My Miami" but it was out of my price range. One day maybe i will own one.:)

I would say some of the most desirable pieces and a lot has to do with hype and marketing, as well as less availability...in no particular order

1) Ktars Melting Pot
2) Monster Mash
3) My Miami
4) Mengs Mummy Eye
5) Flame Thrower
6) Oregon Mummy Eye

I would say the rare Chalice are the Monster Mash and the Melting Pot. Its hard enough to find the MP, but its much harder to duplicate the colors.

Ditto on the melting pot.
Anyone know what that piece went for and where it was purchased from?

Once a week I always order Rare .. bu not corals only on the steak... " how do you like you steak"... Ultra Rare!

Ahh, this thread is a day to early. Tomorrow i'm picking up a colony that i've never seen anything like. I won't be able to post pics on RC but i'll post a pic of it on R2R. It is up there with the melting pot as far as "unique". It will definitely be a new morph to the hobby.

Not sure if its in the same "rare" class as the melting pot and monster mash. Actually looks like my Miami Hurricane with a green rim. The monster mash on the other hand is almost unobtainable and its been around for a long long time.

I think the My miami is more rare than those two. You can get those two just need to know who to ask . I know of at least 10 people that have the monster mash and melting pot and they have mini colony's and other with frags. The My Miami there are only three poeple with it and you want to talk about being unobtainable good luck getting a frag even though we know who has it.

I hear you. Lets see if it can still be true after 4-5 years like the Monster Mash. The MM appeared about the same time as the Tyree/ReefTec/SniperSPS Pink Watermelon and you know only 10 people with it. That alone shows the true rarity of it. Sometimes I wonder if the term "rare" is too loosely thrown around to help sell something new.

Soooooooo when are the prices going down for those "not so rare" chalice? lol
They still seem pretty high to me for a 1 eye 1/4 inch frag.

You know you guys in Cali have all the good stuff lol.

This link may violate something but I'll give it a whorl!

The rarest of them all LOL! I'd bet money that it's an A. rotundoflora.

On topic, I know I have seen frags of many of the name brand chalices... but the one that grows the slowest for me and would be the last thing I would think of fragging would be my Bazooka Joe. That thing hasn't grown a centimeter in 6 months. But the chalices all around it are growing very well.... I can't figure it out!

scyth that isnt rare i bought one from dr mac and it will change colors pending location in tank more light more greenish, less light more toward the orange side, the miami isnt that rare anymore even though is still bring a high price, people thinking they are 1 of only a small few to have something want to believe that, do ya really think that is the only one in the ocean, ive gotten some real ddball stuff out of my lfs ive never seen before, lnc a lfs here has your logo pic f\s also

NyReefNoob, sometimes a name says alot. LOL! Sorry bout that, you set yourself up and I can't pass up an opportunity like that. I can understand why you wold think that, seems to make sense at first. Not going to get into a genetics debate with you, but if someone collects a coral and does not split it with but 3 people, and no one else got a piece of that exact coral, then only those 3 have it. Any similar coral would be different genetically, perhaps like your coral that just happened to change colors. I have an unnamed watermelon that looks like the Tyree, but that doesn't make it so or make it any less beautiful. Dr. Mac wishes he had the Mi Miami, as do most of us who love chalices.

The MM and MP are rare for reasons, not the least of which are they probably are slow growers for most people, and they look really cool. Both are on my to get list. But I know at least a dozen or more people who have each. Sure there are more. If the Mi Miami is a slow grower it will stay rarer. If people don't frag it like crazy it will stay rarer, no matter what is in or comes out of the ocean. Could also argue that being newer influences the "rarity" gradient, but that can change quickly with our cloning techniques. Who's the rarest person in the world? Guess what I am trying to say is every chalice is rare until it starts being fragged, and will say it again, the rarest chalice is in the ocean and will be seen by none of us, that what makes it so rare, never even seen by human eyes. The ever elusive Mr. Hanky chalice!
