RAREst fish in your sps tank

I am a reformed rare-fish nut but I'm thinking about going back though. If I do get back to the whole "rare-fish" scene I'd want to make a statement with the fish. Something a bit more creative such a reef dedicated to a harem of strictly joculators, hot tomatos, interruptus (although IMO, soon these are going to be mass produced commercially) or dare I say resplendens (I can dream can't I? :D ).

I have a Regal and a Tricolor (holocatus) and also one big 10 inch Volitans. I had to give a pair off Zanclus away (which weren't safe with SPS) together with a Goldflake which was terrorised by the Regal.

Julio,

I seem to recall seeing somewhere that a peppermint angel went for $5000 :eek2: I suspect that they go to Japan when they are available.

Interesting about the interruptus being commercially bred - I had not heard about that. A harem of the resplendens would definately be rare. For some reason, resplendens look much better than similar centropyges like argi and flamebacks.

The reason being they are much much more vibrant blue and yellow. They share the same coloration pattern as the starkii damsel.

i saw them on a japanese site some time ago, but they never got back to me and i been trying to locate one for some time now. I know the cost on them sometimes they even fo higher.

Ya from what I understand you are not allowed to collect them anymore. That doesn't mean that some don't make it to the industry, but those that do seem to all end up in the hands of Japanese reefers who seem to be more willing to pay the big bucks.

Thanks Guys!

Any idea what kind of wrasse this is? I have the same one and still haven't been able to identify it correctly.
The Marine Center has them listed as Flameback Fairy Wrasse
(Cirrhilabrus lubbocki). It's definitely nicer looking than my solar wrasse.

Great thread,
Sardaukar, the resplendens looks much better cause it is more expensive and rare, sometimes it's hard to say, but it's true.

Julio, you'll never get a boylei in Japan for 5 grands, you'll have to pay much more for it there, the only chance to get it in this price will be in America I guess.

I'm planning on a hotumatua and/or interrupta and dreaming on a C.debelius ,C.nahackyi and Z.gemmatum.
The nehackyi, I never saw, only on the web and books, if it behaves like the multicolor I'll let it go to my FOWLR, cause I saw some nasty multicolors.(anyone of you have multis with SPS&Clams???)

I was lucky enough to be in a Mauritius shipment, the importer did not know what's in the shipment, but previously,he did get debelius and gems from the same supplier.
I was not THAT lucky , they did not arrive, but I did manage to get a Bodianus opercularis, I was looking for it for long time.

I have a joculator which is sweet.

I've had multicolors. IME, I have found them to be one of the more reef safe pygmys.

I have a sargassum triggerfish in my reef tank. I'd rather have a crosshatch, but this fell into my lap. I am the local fish store guy, so, I get dibs before things hit the retail end. sorry, people. Actually, it was at the store for two weeks without even a nod from anyone. They kinda look nondescript until they are about 5-6" long. Mine is still less than 4", but is getting a little blue tinge already. I'm hoping it'll be more blue than silver, but I have no control over that. we'll see.

oh, yeah. I have a 'rare' zebrasoma flavescens too. a yellow tang. lol. Mine was barely postlarval when I got him--less than 1" and still translucent. he doesn't get fed....only to keep macro/microalgae at bay. I'm not being cruel--he's always plump.
