RBTA/Peppermint Shrimp question

Does anyone have any problems with Peppermint Shrimp stealing food from their RBTA after you feed them? I just watched the shrimp go into the anemone and take the food right out of it's mouth. Bottle trap is in the tank now!!!!

I have several peppermint shrimp and two very large RBTAs. Peppermints never bother them. If your BTA is small, new, or compromised (not doing well) then I'd remove the shrimp.

It's why I reluctantly decided not to keep shrimp, even though I love them. But I have enough trouble fending off the angry female clownfish when I feed her anemones without having shrimp stealing the food from them too!

Well, if your anemone is healthy and you feed it well, it should be fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

The RBTA is still fairly new to the system, about two weeks and i've fed him twice so far? Is this enough or should I be feeding more often. My LFS, said about once a week is ok

I would let the anemone be your guide. Watch how it reacts when you feed your fish; you'll learn to recognize when it's looking for food, because its mouth will look puffy or puckered. If you place a small bit of food on the tentacles, a hungry anemone will grab it and consume it pretty quickly.

I feed mine small, thawed pieces of krill or scallop when they look hungry, which works out to about 3-4 times a week. They've been doing very well and growing steadily (you can see them in my avatar). If they aren't hungry, they simply won't take the food--just make sure to remove the rejected food (if your other animals don't eat it) so it doesn't start to decay in the tank.

I've tried small pieces of silverside so far. Was thinking about raw table shrimp but I never thought about scallops

Some people have stated to stay away from silverside while others have had luck with it. My two will not eat silverside at all. They love shrimp though.

I have 4 peppermint and I just feed them first a smaller piece of the same shrimp I feed my two anemones. That way they are busy for a few minutes.

Like I said earlier, it's new to the system so I'm still trying to figure out what it likes and doesn't. But feeding the Peppermint's first doesn't sound like a bad idea. Thanks worm5406

worm5406: Took your advice and fed the Peppermint's before my nem and worked just as i planned. Peppermint took what I put in there and nem gobbled up what I fed it. Thanks a million!!

My cleaner shrimp go crazy, have to swat them away when I try and target feed anything such as the BTAs.

Yeah it is much easier to 'distract' those that are also hungry...

Kinda like the Rice, Chicken, Fox and the farmer crossing the river in a canoe.

hahaha

Actually, just recently I think my RBTA ate my peppermint. Haven't seen him in a few days, and the day I noticed him missing my anemone was digesting something larger than usual...LOL
