my wife surprised me with a zebra eel which is 24 inches long. Does the eel requires to eat every day or every other day. Also the tank that I have is 180 gallon which i am planning on purchasing PVC piping, and covering it up with live rock so he has spaces to hide. will that suffice for him to be happy or am i missing anything else to make the zebra eel feel comfortable in his new environment. also thanks in advance.

I feed all new eels once a day or even multiple times a day on the first week or so and slowly cut back from there. over the course of a few weeks I get them to eat once every 4-5 days. the initial amount of feeding is to make them feel very comfortable with their new environment and its ability to provide food for the eel. The concept is like instilling the idea to the eel that this new environment will provide for food for him and he will not have to predate on anything. in my experience all the eels I have never ate any ornamental shrimp or fish and I believe it to be due to the fact that in the first few days to weeks, that I have eliminated the need for him to hunt and predate. And so instead of relying on himself he now relies on you to feed.

just my opinions and observations. good luck

I feed my snowflake every 3 days. He has became very dependent on me to feed him. Everytime I open the lid he comes out to see whats going on. He is housed with 4 clowns and 2 tangs as of now. Also have 2 cleaner shrimp, 3 peppermint shrimp, and 1 fire shrimp and none of my livestock have been bothered by the eel. Good luck to you. As long as they are well feed you shouldn't have any issues
