I haven't bought this book for this camera but I have used this series for another camera I own and it was a good starter book.

Does it really take $1300 to get a great digital camera?
No! You can get a really awsome digicam for around $500 USD. You don't necessarily need a DSLR, and it may even be an inconvenience if all you want is simple snaps.

Check out this link and decide first what type of camera best suits your needs. Everyone always recommends DSLRs as a "good" digital camera. But it is more complicated to use and not necessarily for everyone:

Here's a shot that I could never have gotten with a DSLR:

Here's another that a DSLR wouldn't have been able to capture:

hehe... Waiting for someone to ask...

#1) I'm a little hesitant DSLR and point my DSLR at my 3yo daughter's head on a roller coaster.

#2) I didn't take my DLSR to this casual shopping day at the mall.

Point is that DSLRs are a bit big and cumbersome, and sometimes gets left at home, and thereby miss some great photo opportunities.

If it's your only camera, especially for family type photos, I'd reconsider a DSLR. It's nice and gets great images, but you can get great images from a simple point and shoot. The benefit of a P&S is it tends to get taken more places than a DSLR would.

With today's technology, you can get awsome quality prints from a simple P&S that rivals DSLRs up to 8x10 print sizes.

Those shots were done with a Sony DSC-T7, that's smaller than my wallet and gets taken everywhere.

Does fine for non-kid photos too:

Actually, that's what a lot of DSLR owners do - they get a sub-compact to take everywhere, and a DSLR to feed their photography addiction :D

But then, that's gonna cost ya!

That's what I did... :D

Revisiting this thread as I never did get the Rebel XT. After building the house and setting up the tank I found myself over budget by about 30 grand, heh. Never was that good with estimating costs. :D

So I'm going to get one this summer. Earlier on the Rebel XT and Canon 20D were recommeded. I see that there is now a 30D. I think I'm about set with the Rebel XT and giving you all a last chance to change my mind. :)

I had mt rebel xt for about a year now and I don't regret it a bit. It is cheap enough for your family and freinds photos and good enough to take incredible macros and what not if you have the right lenses. It is perfect for beginners.

We have 2 digitals - a Mavica 3.2m that takes the mini -cd's
Kind of slow, but you can take hundreds of pics & just bring a couple cd's with you
We use it around the house mostly now
Just bought a 5m with underwater housing & flash
The wife wanted a small camera that we could easily take anywhere
I still want the DSLR, just waiting to pay off some Home Depot bills

Canon is also doing rebates on some items now. The XT has a $100 rebate while the 100 macro has a $40 rebate. I am sure teh 70-200 F4 also has around a $40 rebate (could be wrong).

I think the kit lens serves its purpose. It isnt as bad as everyone makes it out to be...I mean it IS a $75 lense....

I am also looking to get the 100 macro for by XT in the next couple of weeks!

HTH,

William

I just bought a Canon Rebel XT EOS Silver and could not find a way to shoot pictures in macro mode with flash off. Anyone knows?

I hear alot about the cannon's, but after owning them and the grabbing a Nikon. I would get a D70s. With a Nikor 28-70 and a 70-300. It's an awesome setup and it has a REAL camera feel when you have it in your hands.

did you get the flash for the hot shoe on top. If so just put it on the camera but don't turn it on. That is what I did when I needed to make sure the flash did not popup and go off. Worked great.

So it's either that or the Rebel XT. If I go with the Rebel, do I bother with the 18-55 kit lens or should I save cash get the basic camera with a 70-200 or 75-300 and a 100mm macro?

Thing is, can't seem to be able to locate those lenses:

Help! :D

Check out this link. I got my rebel xt from them and I will probably never need another lens this is a list of what packages they have and if you call them they will answer any questions you have.

and the full size tripod is awesome light weight yet durable and has professional features on it like levels and a weight hook plus a carry bag.
