Recommendations for return pump (100 gallon tank)

I have a 100 gallon truvu tank actually 93.8 gallon (60 x 18 x 20). It has 1 overflow on the left hand side and holes for 2 returns on the top of the tank. I will be getting a custom 3 chamber sump that has a section for protein skimmer | return | fuge.

The return will have a T pipe with a ball valve going to the fuge and the other end of the T pipe going to a Y pipe to both returns at the top of the tank. Same is this setup.

I'm looking for a good reliable and quiet pump. I came across an Eheim 1262 and have seen some pretty positive reviews and comments. Will this pump be ok for my setup? Any other pumps you recommend?

I'm a big fan of the Eheim pumps. Quiet, low temperature pickup, reliable.

Check its pump curve against your expected head pressure losses and see if it'll make the flow you're looking for to feed your skimmer and fuge. Marine Depot shows the pump curve on their product information page.

i aLWAYS target 5 times the total water volume, so if yours is 100 i would use a 500 gph pump with a decend head, eheim are very nixe

Well I tried the head loss calculator at the side of the site but they did not have a 1262 so I used the 1250 model and guestimated some numbers and came up with this result.

Total losses are 4.55 feet of head pressure, or 1.97 PSI. with a flow rate of 174 GPH. Process took 96 iterations.

Not sure what all that means but maybe a 1260 might be better for my situation? Is a 1262 overboard? It's rated at 635 gph. I plan on using pvc pipe for my plumbing. I guess 3/4" is the way to go for return?

From all the posts I have been reading looks like the Eheim 1262 is the way to go, they are expensive though. What is the best place to purchase them economically. I guess they pay for themselves in the long run if you replace them every 10 years. :)

IMO, I really think you should be looking for the model that will provide you with 3x through the sump, no more... (1260 w/valve)
the longer your water dwells in the sump, the more of a chance it has of being filtered by the skimmer/fuge/media reactor, and you will consume less watts. use those watts to produce flow in the main display, not excess water flow through the sump.

The 1262 is rated for 3400 L/h or 900 gph - you can see the flow curve here - http://www.jlaquatics.com/product/em-pun3400/Eheim+Universal+1262+Water+Pump.html
It is very quiet and reliable.

Don't know if you already have your sump - but a very nice way to do a sump is to have it in 3 compartments - one side is the skimmer, the middle is the return and the other side is the fuge. You split your return down to the sump - one goes to the skimmer, one to the fuge, and both meet in the middle to go back to the tank - that way you can have slower flow through the fuge, and control the flow rates separately.

So I might be better off going with a 1260? For the overflow I made a 1.5" durso standpipe and it will go into a 1.5" flex pvc into the skimmer area of the sump. Should I make 1" returns on each side and to the refugium?

I have a 100gal tank right now I have a mag 9.5 but just bought a Eheim 1262 to replace the mag with. I also run my phosban reactor and my fuge on the return pump so you could do that or the 1260 would work just fine.

Hi joey, what size pipe are you running as returns?
