just wanted peoples opinions on red bugs. those of you who live with it, do you find that the bugs do damage? ive read that some people live with it with little problems. ive seen the damage they do, but im wondering if thats all due to the bugs or due to hobbists stressing the coral. opinions??

I'd say wait it out.
If they do damage, kil them, if they don't no sense in losing invertebrates over it.

This is a coral-killer. Your friends and lfs will not appreciate this social disease, even if you have nothing they prey on.

Kill them bugs! Kill 'em all!

I have had red bugs for over 18 months in a SPS dominated tank that has simply thrived. I am not willing to kill off my acro crabs and other inverts just to get rid of the bugs since all of my SPS have fantastic color, growth and health. You can always dip frags to rid the bugs before you trade them so your not spreading the bugs around.

If your dog has fleas what would you do? :lol2: They won't kill the dog, the dog will still eat and grow, the dog will still be relatively happy [except when it's annoyed by the little parasites digging and scratching into it's skin] hmmm... if there were only a simple cure for fleas :D

If my dog had fleas I would give him a dip in a flea bath, because I care about my dog. It would annoy me to see him itching going crazy when i know I could do soemthing to help him.

Sorry, I should have added that is how I feel the red bugs are to the acros. when a bug bites your acros polyp it is not happy and neither is your dog when he gets bit. There are ways to treat these things, and make the dog/acro feel better.

Ditto.

FYI this is slowly turing into the new DSB or BB debate so be careful I've had A LOT of people send me nasty PM's and tell me I have no idea what I am doing and that I am a poor reefkeeper because I live with them in my tank. Do what you think is best for your tank, but you can live with them just keep the rest of your tank in line (water quality, etc) and you can be fine; just my opinion and experience.

I too lived with them for a while (few months) and my tank did fine. BUT, after I treated is was so much better. Better polyp extension, growth and color.

Well said :)

Folks who want to live with them for whatever reason should... but you have to understand why intelligent people may not understand why you would choose to, given the simple cure. By and large my corals were just "fine" with the bugs, with the exception of one which was particularly vulnerable to them, that coral was why I treated. After the treatment, I found that my corals were no longer "fine" living without them... they were more like... excellent :D BTW I'm just kidding with you... by all means enjoy your bugs. Sheesh... sorry again

exactly what i was thinking, but do you think if i start seeing damage, it will be too late? while we are talking about damage, what should i be looking for? bleaching? rtn? bitemarks?

thanks

excellent point!

I have them. I lived with them for a few months, but some of my acros are losing a lot of color, and I'm not seeing much growth. I am treating this weekend. Eventhough my tank is looking great and nothing is dying, I keep wondering if it could be even better without the bugs.
