Red Carpet Qs

How do you know if a carpet is a red carpet or a mini max?
What color is a carpet's oral disc?

I just picked up a few "baby red carpets" but I am not really sure if they are carpets or mini max. They are as big as a ric.

Here is a pic of one of them. its a big shrivel since it just moved homes.

Its hard to say, it is possible for it to be a S. gigantea but I would think unlikely as I do not think I have seen them anywhere at that size. The small ones normally come in at around 4-6 inches, at least at all the sites I see.

It does look like a mini maxi, which is also a carpet anemone (tapetum?), but a different variety and it usually never gets very big.

This is the first time I have ever seen these "red carpet" that small. I mean I had a ton of mini maxi before, but they sting like mad. When I had this touching me, I didn't feel like i got stung at all.

I have quite a few mini maxis and the sting does not bother me at all. Then again I also have a haddoni and multiple magnificas whose stings don't bother me either.

It appears someone found a location of a new color morph of S. tapetum and is flooding the stores with them.

When they get bigger than a half dollar cut them in half. You can always trade with people. The frag easily. Just cut down the middle and make sure you get a piece
Of the mouth. Keep away from rock structures.

I traded a used mp40 for 5 of these guys...

That was your clue right there. Haddonis do not asexually reproduce. They are broadcast spawners. Finding 5 babies, of the exact same rare color morph, at the same time, would be almost impossible. Given that a baby haddoni hasn't been seen on Reef Central in my memory (of any color morph) I'd say you were taken for a ride.

That said, those are still awesome mini/maxis :)

There was a baby blue haddoni, about 2 inches or so, posted in mid/early 2010. I know because I posted it looking for help. It didn't make it. In hindsight, I know I gave it too much light and no acclimation. I was still too new for a Haddoni then.

I'm pretty sure I saw these in person when they first came in, back in March. Here's a photo of them at the LFS:

Strangely enough, IIRC they had 5 of them.

I am 99% positive that they aren't gigantea. I also don't think they are haddoni, given the amount that were imported as folks have already mentioned, but also because they didn't "look" like haddoni. Granted, we haven't seen baby haddoni (not this small) and I've never seen a red gig, at any size, so we can't say with 100% certainty what these are.

Speaking of baby haddoni, another LFS had a "baby carpet" back in December of last year, and it looked a lot like a haddoni to me:

I considered buying it but I thought it would get lost in my 120 gallon tank since it was only about 2" (not to mention that they wanted $300+ for it).

It's hard to explain, but now that I've seen quite a few gigs and haddoni, I'm having an easier time telling them apart, and I now have an immediate "gut reaction" when I see Stichodactyla. These nems didn't give me that "gut reaction".

So, if I were to guess what these are, I'd say mini-maxi.

Learning something new everyday about the hobby. I don't have much experience or knowledge of carpets. I agree they are pretty cool...what irked the most was they were "claimed" to be haddonis...oh well. live and learn. :) they don't seem to like my LED much hehe.
