I have been wanting to add a red planet to my collection for the past few months. None of my LFS seem to have one and if I do track down someone with one they want like 60-100 bucks for a tiny piece. I figured this thing has been around long enough they would be more available and better priced??? Whats the deal?

Patience really plays a key here. Summer is slow for a lot of fish stores here in New England. I am not sure about your area. The frags seem to start rolling in when the weather cools off. I would simply check around and keep asking. Let LFSs know your price point you would like to buy at.

ya I have 1 store that I have said im looking for it. He did have a tierra del fuego acropora in his show tank he fragged for me. very tiny piece for 30 bucks. Its kinda similar but not as much green. His in the show tank has almost no green and mine is 100% red right now. Only growth from it so far is just growing over the glue I used to secure it to the rock so time will tell.

My red planets growth is absolutely insane, there's no reason a 1" frag should be more than $40.

If you visit Orlando, I'll cut you a frag for $20! :)

While Acropora anthocercis is a fairly fast growing species, it tends to base out like crazy before branching out, I do agree, its been around so long now the prices in some local fish stores in some areas of the country can still be a bit extreme, but fairly cheap where I live, I can go to the LFS i used to work at and grab a generous "1 frag off their mother colony for about $20, granted, their prices are lower than any retailer I have ever seen, Bandit angel=$500
Supply and demand I guess.

my suggestion would be to join a local reef club. by FAR the cheapest way to obtain sps frags is a local hobbiest. a 1" red planet.... id say 20$ max

Hasn't been my experience personally, and mine has very thick branches and dense growth as well. Maybe I'm the exception though. :p

Must be, I have just always seen it encrust/ base out a whole bunch before shooting off new branches, you must be doing something right.

Mine grew real wierd.

That is really odd, definitely a RP but growth pattern wise almost looks like A. prostrata. Does it receive lighter flow? Id be willing to bet if you nailed it with heavier flow it would start densing/plating up.

nice piece though.

I'll be in Jax next Thursday and depending on what area you're in I'll just bring you one. Mine grows so fast I give them away to local folks.

Send me a pm if you like.
