Red Sea Desjardini vs. Regular Sailfin - Agressiveness comparison

All,

I'm looking for input from those who have had experience with Desjardini and/or regular sailfin tangs - namely, whether one specie happened to be more aggressive than the other in your experience.

Furthermore, do Red Sea Desjardini's typically have better coloring than Desjardinis from Sri Lanka? If so, how difficult was it to acquire a Red Sea specimen?

Ime neither is very aggressive, that being said all fish are different and may not behave the same. Yes Red Seas have better colors and shouldnt be hard to come by. You will pay extra for a Red Sea but not much more.

For a tang they're not very aggressive and IME there is no notable difference between the two species. In fact I'd go so far as to say that all Zebrasoma are similar with the exception of purple tangs being the most aggressive of the genus.

I personally have never noticed a big difference in Desjardini from different locations.

I have had my Desjardini for 6 months now and he hasn't been aggressive at all. Now I did qt him with my naso tang, but other than a few chases around the tank, nothing whatsoever. Eats like a pig too!

Is he a Red Sea specimen? How large are your two tangs?

Here is a decent pic of my Red Sea Sailfin, he is in QT currently and the smallest sailfin I have ever seen He might measure 2 inches, generous estimate, but you can already see the insane amount of yellow in his fins.



My camera is not the greatest but you get the idea, this guy eats like a hog and started eating just an hour after going in the tank. Of course the Red Sea Regal Angel showed him who was in charge hence the missing part on his fin.

It's all about the individual fish. I've had regular sailfins come in that were very timid, then again we have one curently who has killed a dispar anthias, a flame angel, and beat up a platnium goby. The des. sailfins that have come in have all been timid fish, but again its individual fish. As far as coloration goes: they are somewhat similar. But the orange lines on a des. really set them apart from a regualr. I almost wish they constantly kept their "mad" colors, they are stunning fish when they have the darker coloration. If you look at the current TOTM, the picture of the des. they took are the darker colors I'm talking about.
