Got home today after 8 hours of car shopping and found my beloved cleaner shrimp dead. He's gone the way of the crustacean buddies before him. I'm not sure what killed him as he was eating today before I left. I hope it's not some evil hitchiker that I have yet to discover. Although, I always here these clicking sounds since the inception of the clean up crew and have always thought the clickings were due to snails twisting their ligaments. Perhaps, the dreaded dare I say MS or PS?

I'm going to do water testing to see what my parameters are. SAD Day! :(

Kent - I didn't see your post. It was quick and probably humane. The nudi is dead probably due to lack of oxygen. Slow death. :(

Reefmack - The tank is looking much better with a lot of the coralline gone.

How are the mushrooms growing? Are they growing at fast rate?

An aussie acan in your tank will definitely liven things up! *HINT, HINT*

The black sponge is for mechanical filtration. The live rock will provide enough of the biological filtration

Marty

martinphillip03 - Thank you for you comment.
I think the sponges might be too saturated and thats what's causing the low level on the pumps bay.
I hope that tomorrow I will have better news about the bubbles.

Arreola

Re: Before, Halfway There, and Done!

One thing I like thats funny about all your tank shots is; the gobys? head sticking out from the rock. Its almost the same in all three shots.

Arreola I agree with Kent - difficult to tell where your water level is. Based on the level being where the reflection starts, it looks like you may be about an inch below the black trim? I run my water level so that it's about 1/8-1/4 inch below the trim in front. I run mine so that there's maybe 1/8-1/4 inch of air space at the top of the overflow gate - just enough space to let any surface oil/scum be able to be pulled through the gate. I have a feeling your water level is too low, which would make the level low in back, and help cause microbubbles. I also have my gate all the way down.

-------

The tank has cleared up since my Major Coralline Attack #2 yesterday. The single edge razor on a 12 inch handle let me get a lot more of it off on the right side of the gate.

Before (9 month old 20 k metal halide lamp, but you get the idea):

Last weekend - Major Coralline Attack #1 - new 14k metal halide bulb in - I couldn't get at the coralline on the left side of the gate with the 6 inch wide Aqua Medic Razor Scraper:

After yesterday's attack with the new razor scraper. I broke a corner off 2 blades, but was able to retrieve them:

The gate is still covered, but to me it looks much better. Sorry all you coralline lovers, but I've learned to hate the stuff! :) If you don't want a pink tank keep after it before it gets too thick. I've learned my lesson!

Reefmack The tank does look a lot nicer without the coraline.

The difference is with coraline it looks like a reef growing against a man made wall. In the bottom picture it looks like a ridge on an open reef. I find the bottom picture more natural looking.

Aaron Peer - Maybe it is a Mantis or Pistol shrimp that's killing your shrimp? Are you sure it's not a molt? That clicking noise does indicate the possibility of a MS or PS though. All of my my mushroom types are doing very well. I have a few Ricordea floridas that have split several times - one right up on top but behind the Montipora SPS on the top left, and difficult to see unless you can stand by the tank and look down. Also another florida that's split a few times on the bottom substrate on the right.

They're difficult to see as they're almost the color of my coralline covered rock, but the bottom third of the rock on the right side (below the gorilla nipple zoa colony & behind the blue damsel in the last pic) is covered in purple Ricordea yumas - a big original mother that expands to 4 inches across, and several babies spreading down the rock almost to the bottom now. Very prolific, but unfortunately not the brightest colored yumas. I also have some loose green dichosoma type shrooms that finally settled & found a home on the bottom right side and are multiplying.

I love the Aussie Acans, but I had to get rid of a big purple Acan I had as it was putting out mesenterial filaments (a bit like sweepers) and attacking nearby corals, so I've avoided them ever since. Maybe you recall that picture I've posted a few times of it attacking my brain coral. I'm hoping my big red Blastomussa wellsi starts multiplying soon. I also have one very small red micromussa on the bottom that hasn't done much so far in multiplying.

My Duncans are growing surprisingly fast and have put out several new small heads in the few weeks I've had them. I don't think I've ever had anything multiply as fast as the Duncans - they really amaze me.

Arreola Let us know how cleaning the sponges did in improving your water level in back. You can only clean that original RSM white filter so many times before it needs replacement. Buying a large piece of a similar filter pad and cutting it to size is the lowest cost way to replacing it frequently.

martinphillip03 Yep - that's my big blackfinned shrimp goby's home in the cavern under the middle of the rock. At feeding time he's all over the place. The rest of the time that's where I can always find him - staring at me and chasing intruders away, other than the serpent star who also hangs out in that opening under the rock. They're pretty good buddies now LOL!

Brent I totally agree on the look with the coralline gone. It looks more natural, almost like looking into deep water behind the rock, and not like a man made pink wall. The corals show up better and the pictures aren't overwhelmed with a pink cast. Now all I have to do is keep after the coralline, and not let it get as bad as it was.

water Level & Microbubbles

water Level & Microbubbles

Reefmack - As I posted last night, I cut the black foam to 1 1/2" and clean the white pad.
The water level on the pumps bay is UP, but so are the bubbles!!!

I turn off the skimmer to see if the bubbles are comming from there, but no difference so far.

I'm about to grab a Beretta 12GA Shotgun, and practice clay shooting with the darn pumps.

I called the distrubutor that I uprchase the RSM , and told them about the problem, they will send the instalation guy to check out the bubbles and try to find the source.

For now, I will have to deal with havingh the bubbles in my tank.

Thanks for asking.

Arreola Well, at least you got the water level up in the pump chamber, even if you didn't get rid of the microbubbles. If they were skimmer related I would think you should have seen the bubbles stop very soon after shutting off the skimmer. Hold off on the shotgun till the installation guy gets there. Gee - I wish I had an installation guy available when I first set up my tank! Let us know what you find out. In the meantime pretend that you are enjoying the bubbles :)

I will hold shotgun until the instalation guy comes here.
Until then, I will see how the lovely and colorful bubbles fly arround the tank along with that incredible brown alge!!

UGHHHHH.......I just replaced my lights about 2 hours ago and just now realized my fans aren't running........I am not sure what to do.....Any ideas?

Thanks will get to it in a little while, I am in serious pain from moving around to much and having to wear this neck brace from my herniated disc surgery.....BTW does anyone have the number to Pinky at red sea? Their website seems all jacked up when I click on the contact link it tells me page can not be displayed....when I go to the redseafish.com site and click on contact us it says the page is under construction.

brycek My goodness, don't push yourself while you're still healing!

Here's the info. you asked for:

Pinky Bulot U.S.A. Office: Red Sea 18125 Ammi Trail Houston, Texas 77060
Tel: (281) 447-0205 Fax: (281) 447-1153 Toll Free: 1-888-RedSea9

I used to have Pinky's email but can't find it - it may be in my work emails.

Reefmack - I must have missed that post about your acan stinging your brain. The reason I ask about the mushrooms and especially the ricordea because I have a ric florida too and it doesn't seem to grow. I've had it for a three weeks.

I had to laugh when you mentioned the gorilla nipple zoa.
