Red Sea Max Owners Club

I am a newbie and would like to know what kind of corals can I expect to be successful with using the lighting that comes with the Red Sea Max 130D

It has been quite a long time for me in this forum but I am happy to report that my RSM 130 has been running for one year now with no major problems. I am having an aiptasia problem right now with a big bloom all over and the beginning a red algae bloom in some areas of the tank. Any advice would be helpful.

I just got done with my first dose try of Red Sea's Aiptasia-X so I will let everyone know how that goes.

Thanks
Rob

Rob,

Have you changed the lights on your RSM yet? I found that after about 9-10 months I started to get red algae, which quickly cleared with new tubes.

LED's- sorry to hear they have stopped working. They are easy to replace either by your dealer or by yourself if you're willing to. Contact Pinky at Red Sea (pinky@redseafish.com) and include this part of the thread so she knows you have spoken to me. She should be able to send you a new LED driver & led's. Any problems PM me.

Good to hear people are renewing the MAX lamps after approx 9 months. Like any fluorescent lamps, the performance drops off over time and its often the cause of unexplained algae problems. We recommend replacing every 9-12 months. Once you install the new lamps you really notice the difference.

Felix- I'll check with our USA office and get back to you. I believe they may have just arrived in the USA.

Doihave... The lamps are very easy to replace. You don't need any tools nor do you need to remove the hood. Simply undo the plastic locking screws that hold the lens cover in place, it will pop out and you can change the lamps. Takes 2 minutes.

Doihave...sorry I just re-read the post and of course you are referring to the led's. They are a little more complicated but are pretty straightforward. We can supply very clear instructions for opening the hood, and the led replacement isn't difficult. Should take you 10 minutes tops. Drop Pinky an email and get her to send you the led's and instructions

Does anyone know how to modify the lighting so the bulbs operate individually?

Could I just cut a wire and put in a switch to turn one off or would I need to wire in a second ballast?

Mike

I posted this as a thread under the lighting section. It is regarding my RSM. I know a lot of mods have been made and discussed in this thread. Anyone else try this? See below.

Any opinions on over driving PC bulbs much like T5 or T8 HO's?

Power Compacts are T5 bulbs. Why wont this work? Why cant I replace the current electronic ballast in my hood that is set up to push (2) 55 watt PC bulbs with an electronic ballast designed for (2) 96 watt bulbs. I could replace the lamps with (2) 65 watt units to lessen the discrepancy in ballast/lamp.

I'm sure lamp life would be decreased but I don't care. I'll change my lamps every 6 mo's instead of every 10.

to many posts without a pic. here you go.

So if I have the original 130 RSM, is there any benefit to upgrading some of the components to the 130d, partivularly the skimmer? Or is it even possible? How are the lights any better as well?

I dont know if the lights are better. If you are looking for a better skimmer go with the tunze nano skimmer. I love mine.
