Red Serpent Star problems?

I have been looking for a red serpent star for some time. My LFS finally got some in, so I snagged one last weekend. All was well for a week.

2 nights ago, it looked like it had eaten something it was not supposed to. Last night when I got home, what was left of my emerald crab was laying next to it. I was shocked, to say the least.

I have had more than enough experience with green brittle stars to know better, but in the 25 or so years I've been in this hobby, never have i had an issue with a serpent star.

Anybody else have problems like this???

I have also read and heard of bad similar things with red serpent stars but never had any experience with one myself. But are you sure he ate the emerald crab and it didn't just molt? It seems unlikely...

I was too funky last night after cutting the grass to stick my arm in the tank - we'll see if it's a molt tonight. I did not see the emerald anywhere in the tank however, and it is set up so that there are no blind spots.
