Red Spotted Blenny murdered Diamond goby..

I have a Red Spotted Blenny in 40g long QT along with other fish. Just bought a Diamond goby slightly smaller than the RS Blenny. Last night I saw the diamond goby's body floating along the bottom. Then I see the RS Blenny would come at it and take a bite of it even though it's already dead. I didn't realize Blennies would kill like this? Anyone else seen similar experiences?

Well, it can be hard to tell if something actually did the killing or is just taking advantage of a free meal with the body. Blennies can certainly nip and some species are aggressive to a point. I don't know about your species. But killing the goby to dine on it? No, I don't think so. Killing it for territory reasons and then snacking on the results? That seems possible.

I'm not surprised. In the early days of our first tank, we had an upset in some of the parameters (cannot remember which at this point) and we thought we lost the blenny. He was gone for 2 weeks and we replaced him. That evening the other blenny was nearly murdered and our original blenny was perched back in his usual spot. I read that blennies can be territorial and perhaps the goby was just too similar.

a small handful of blennies --- the lawnmower, and apparently the redspot---can get territorial. Possibly the orange spots on the diamond looked too similar to him. Most combtooth blennies are very easygoing: the starry and tailspot get along with each other and everyone else...but the fanged blennies can get quarrelsome; and as aforesaid, the lawnmower---though I've had a lawnmower in a 100 g tank with just about everything and absolutely no problems.

I have one for two years now. He isn't agressive but he doesnt like tangs coming near him.

I bet it was those orange spots. I had a bicolor blenny kill a royal gramma years ago. Both are half dark anteriorly and half yellow posteriorly.

My tonga Golden Blenny kills any sand sifters I tired to add since I added him. Ive tried Diamond, bullet and Gold sleeper. Doesnt mind my Midas Blenny, Bar goby or the purple firefish I just added.

I love that fish!!! However both times I tried to keep them they've died. Some of the club members have had difficulties w them too. I've kept a Midas Blenny, w a Black Sailfin Blenny and several gobies w no aggression.
