Redbugs in LFS

I ended up with a case of bugs a few months back, i always used the same store for my corals, as did a few of my friends.
So i went into Clayton Pet Emporium last week and checked the tank, Sure enough every smooth skinned acro in there had bugs easily visible. I told them about it and they told me they know they are there, redbugs are from the ocean......
I know we all have used this store, im posting this so you know and you can check your tank if you have bought anything there within the last few months. There is only one way to beat the pests and thats to be proactive.

I don't think there are any stores w/o redbugs. That's why all new sps need to be treated.

Hit them with some Tropic Marine Pro Coral Cure or Fluke tabs while your at it, they will more than likely have AEFW also.

Check all your Montipora for Nudis after that.

So your telling me that you will walk into a store knowing it has bugs in the sps tank, and you would buy something?

And we wonder why its soo common. Newbs dont know what a redbug is or what it will do to their corals, then they wonder why the sps keep dying and either get more or get out of the hobby. These stores are making a mint on people who come in and unwittingly take home The bugs, then the corals die and ya go back for more. It makes no sense AT ALL that we accept this as normal practice and just say well every store has bugs.

Thanks for the tips letmegrow, i have all my bases covered. I learned the hard way and i am taking the most agressive approach i can to never get infested again and not to infest anyone else.
I do not and will not accept that as normal practice for any store, its like selling a dog with heartworms and not saying a word to the new owner.

If you are buying SPS you should know most of the dangers regardless of what the LFS does or does not tell you. Research x 3.

I have been saying for years a LFS should hold a clinic a couple times a month to tell people the more advanced or topics that do not come up in casual conversation.

If a LFS were to tell every person every danger of keeping anything alive people would be so overwhelmed they would turn around and go back to freshwater.

Plus Intercepter is cutting edge by the time you trickle it down to the LFS who are not always up to date.
We are lucky to have RC and learn how to treat and identify problems. Currently we are trying out the Furan II procedure to cure Zoapox. So far so good.

It depends on what you want out of a LFS.
There will always be a trade off, but if you are honest and cautious on how you bring up their selling practices a lot of them will take kindly to advise and new information and change for the better. Saltwater has not hit it's plateau yet, not all the counts are in, we still have a lot to learn.

I agree it kind of sucks but we can change that in about 99% of the stores in the greater St. Louis area.

+ If stores have to medicate and treat all SPS before they are sold the price will sky rocket.

Personally I would rather treat my own corals to ensure it is done right. I know a few others feel that way strongly too.

red bugs free food for dragon face pipefish, aren't they about the only fish to eat em, atleast thats what i read.

some dragon face eat them......I hope mine doesn't, just for the fact that I never have any for him to eat :D

Chad - I agree!! It is best when a LFS informs consumers of issues yet things do get missed - not intentionally. The more research a buyer does the better off the exchange is at the LFS because it involves educated consumers as well as educated employees (hopefully!!:eek1: )
