Redspot Cardinalfish - Apogon parvulus

I have A. parvulus fry in my tank. Didn't expect that to happen. My husband noticed them on Sunday. I'm not set up for rearing them, so I don't expect them to survive.

Its fantastic to see so many folks being successful with keeping these fishes. If one obtains healthy and properly handled and conditioned specimens and they are introduced to the display initially and allowed to settle in properly with little to no competition from more active and aggressive tank mates, these fish can do very well.

Our test batch of 10 is still thriving, eating anything from small pellets, to flake foods, and most frozen foods they can fit into their mouths. They still spawn regularly, but as of yet we are still unsuccessful at rearing any of the offspring.

Just wanted to revive this, I purchased 10 of these guys, 9 are remaining and doing very well.

Lemon, glad to hear yours are doing so well!

Jordani, I unfortunately don't have a build thread. I was in the hobby previously, and was forced to take my tank down when I relocated. When I decided to rebuild I did so too quickly and didn't document the process well! I'm looking at upgrading soon, and when I do I'm going to be sure to go slow, do it right, and document the whole process! Also, I'm VERY embarrassed by that picture. HA was out of control, the tank looks much more tidy now!

does anyone know where i can get a group of these? i cant find anywhere online that sells them.

Update- DFS/LiveAquaria

Update- I am happy to say that our group of 10 fishes are still thriving a year later. I think the lack of attrition with this group in one of our office aquariums can be attributed to them being housed with a pair of spotted mandarin and a pair of Latez clownfish. No other fishes have been added to the aquarium and it receives regular weekly water changes and numerous feedings throughout the day.

We offer them frequently in the Divers Den section of LiveAquaria.com, and you should see groups of 5 available this week and next.

who knows if these fish are jumpers
As far as these fishes being jumpers, Cardinalfish species normally do not jump but on occasions, when startled, they may so its best to cover open topped displays with either a glass canopy or fine mesh netting.

Happy Fishkeeping,

I will start photographing multiple groups of 5 on the days we add them to the Divers Den section of LiveAquaria.com.

Thank you much and enjoy the holidays!

These fish are mainly exported out of Cebu, Philippines.

Cheers,

Im from Philippines and this fish are readily available from divers or lfs... I think the poor survival rate of the fish is attributed to the long hours of travel from Phil to the US. i started with 15 4 months ago and now i just lose 1 because of carpet surfing... nice fish and i think its a hardy once acclimated properly in a tank. hth
