Reef octopus pump noise

I have a relatively new reef octopus NWB 150 skimmer, only 2 months old, which just started making more noise than usual. The pump sounds like it is chattering, kind of like a roller coaster getting pulled up the track. I can unplug the skimmer and let it sit for a minute and then plug it back in and it runs silently; however, a few hours later the pump starts making the noise again. I've opened the pump up and everything looks alright. Any ideas on what to do about this noise?

I am not sure this will help you since the skimmer is so new, but whenever my pump starts making noise I disconnect it and throw it in a 5g bucket full of vinegar and water. Let it run for about an hour and it is quiet as can be again. I have to do it about every six months or so. I have a recirc model, but it is very similar to what you have.

its the stock pump. i tried the water/vinegar bath but the noice still came back. I might just return the skimmer, the body of the skimmer also has little fractures in it that are spreading. you can bearly feel them with your fingernail. could this be crazing? i would hate to have to ship this skimmer back and deal with all the hassles that come along with it. i've always heard pretty good reviews about this skimmer. Any advice?

thanks fastjunkie, glad to know im not the only one with this problem, how long does it take for the noise to come back after you've unpluged it?

here are the cracks. im just going to have to return the skimmer, the cracks are spreading so fast.

Sorry for the huge picture, im new to this stuff

Yeah, I'm guessing its from how they bend the plastic or polish it. I have know idea why it's happening or why it's spreading. The only work I've done with acrylic is bending it for my coast to coast overflow. Maybe someone with some "plastic knowledge" will chime in.

yeah they are. the president of vue called me a b****. And accused me of dropping the skimmer and that is the only way the cracks could get there and that he can't help me. Which still doesnt explain why the cracks are spreading.

i got it from aquacave. that is who i've been talking to the whole time. he has forwarded me all the email conversations between him and vue technology.

yes. i sent them pictures, then they needed more, so i sent more, then they needed more, so i sent more. then the president from vue said the only way is if it was dropped, and he can't do anything about it. The funny thing is that if i dropped it there are two points on the skimmer that protrude further out than where the fracture is.

here is part of the email i sent in responce to him saying i dropped it

Dropping the skimmer would not cause the cracks in that area of the skimmer body as depicted by the pictures I sent you. It would not even be possible for the area in which the cracking has occurred to touch the ground due to the other components of the skimmer body extending beyond the outer limits of the area in question. The top of the tapered cone in which the plexiglass is cracking has a black ring that protrudes beyond the outer edge of the plexiglass cone; therefore, if the unit was dropped it would hit the black ring first. The cylindrical body of the skimmer is the second point of impact that would hit and there is no evidence of this or any other area of the skimmer being damaged.

If the skimmer was dropped wouldn't there be marks along these two points?

If it was dropped and hard enough to cause the plexiglass to flex and cause the so called "stress fractures" according to Mr. D'Aquin, it would certainly be enough to leave a mark along the areas on the skimmer I noted above.

Please take the time yourself to lay one of these skimmers down on its side and you will see that the area of the crack is a full 1.5 inches from coming in contact with the ground.

I am merely trying to get this issue resolved. If I did caused this damage I would most certainly have taken full responsibility and bought the needed parts to repair the skimmer. I am not trying to mislead you or Mr. D'Aquin in order to get a new skimmer at your expense.

That is just messed up with those cracks. I'll have to keep an eye on my RO skimmer as I just bought one a month ago.

yeah. im guessing if you had it you would notice. i circle it with a dry erase marker every day and when i look at it a day later it has already spread past the circle by about 1/4 of an inch
