Reef Ready or Not?

Reef Ready or Not? That is the question I need to answer. What's your opinion?

(Tank will be a 180 FOWLR setup with a 40-75 gallon sump and a big skimmer)

Not even a question to ponder; absolutely yes!

The real question is, what style of drilled overflow do you want?

That's the debate. Do I buy one already drilled with an internal overflow or do I buy a standard tank, drill it myself and do my own overflow like a coast to coast with a bean animal or some other type

If you are comfortable drilling it or have someone to do it for you, the choice is simple. Coast to coast. Even better if it is one of the stealth style overflows with a very thin internal and the bean/herbie on the outside!

I'd go with a manufacturer drill. Let them make it to your specifications and if there's a problem it's there problem.

If it is acrylic, things are easy to do and you can do it yourself. If glass, then have the manufacturer do it.

If used acrylic tank, this would be something I would go with to see how well it functions.

If its a custom new tank, have the manufacture try something similar.

If you have any doubt about the function/maintenance of these newer styles, go with the traditional overflow box that are proven to work well!

I'm always open to try new things, so I would personally go with the reefsavvy style overflow box.

I think the guiding question between your first question (internal versus overflow) really depends on your space and where you are putting it.

If you have extra room to set the tank 6-9" or so from the wall, then go with an externally plumbed, coast to coast with a bean animal. (see previous advice about whether you or someone else should drill it).

If space is a consideration, go with an internal reef-ready tank, as not having all the space behind it is the advantage to that design.
