i suffered a loss last night and i'm down to only two fish. I'm looking to bump the number back up to three fish but it must meet these requirements...
reef safe
algae eater/grazer
needs to be hardy (my adult tomato clown is aggressive towards smaller fish)
tank size 40 gallon
What do you think would be a good addition?

Lawnmower blennies are great fish....and should fit your needs.

Another good one is a foxface lo, but I think they need larger tanks.

if u just recently lost a fish wait a month to let the tank settle back down. but you could buy one now and QT it keep watch on the display.

a grazer in a 38 is kinda rare outside of the lawnmower blenny

I haven't had much luck with Tangs going after algae...
Yellow tang wouldn't touch it-
Purple tang doesn't touch it-
Kole tang eats some types off the glass but doesn't make any dents in it...

lawnmower blenny!!! cleared my tank out in less then 2 weeks. My other fish just ignore him wherever he goes

Mexican Turbo Snails are hard to beat for algae eating - I would recommend 5 in a tank your size. Magnficent foxface is awesome for a fish, but they need a bigger tank.
