Reef Safe Angels

What's in your "reef" tank? Flame Angels are pretty notorious for nipping at soft polyps, zoas, and clam mantles. Having said that, for every story of an angel biting on stuff you'll hear a story about a tank with angels that don't touch a thing. I think it's a crapshoot.

Coral Beauties are relatively reef safe, but like the flame angel run the risk of nipping at clams and snails.

Any Angel other than Genicanthus is NOT reef safe no matter what anyone here tells you. Even Genicanthus nipping isn't unheard of, but it's quite rare.

Blanket statements are not accurate. That's like saying all women are bad drivers, while sometimes I feel like that's true, there are plenty that are good drivers. Each angel is an individual. Compound that with tankmates, feeding regimens, and types of food available, and you don't know what an angel is going to do. I have a rusty in my tank, and he doesn't touch a thing. My roommate had a flame, and a coral beauty in his, and they don't touch a thing. Genicanthus are the most reef safe, but there are more than that that can be safe in a reef.

i had a lemon peel which destroyed my polpys, but didnt touch anything else, once the polyps were gone he was reef safe, lol

Lamark and even though it's silver and black, its a big contrast due to the coral colors and the vividness of the other reef fish!

I have a Japanese Swallow Tail (female) and a Zebra Angel (male) in my tank. Very reef safe and I feel are excellent looking angels in a reef tank.

Oh the irony...

All I'm saying is that any genus outside of Genicanthus is a decent size risk, and I don't find that to be a blanket statement.

I have a Bellus, Flame Angel, Coral Beauty, and Yellow and Black Angel (Centropyge Heraldi) in my tank. All but the Bellus nipped at my sps until they discovered the algae clip :)

I have a koran and a flame angel in my reef and they've never bothered anything. Not to say they won't the older they get!

It all depends on what you consider "reef" and what type of corals. With zoas and LPS, i'd very cautious. With SPS corals, you probably don't have much to worry about....but these are general comments. My cherub doesn't touch any corals (now), but my nox angel likes to snack on my duncans, hammer, and trumpet coral, but leaves my favia brain, frogspawn, and torch alone. It also will only nip at any pink or orange colored zoas but will leave the blues and greens alone. Wierd

I have a flame, japanese swallow tail-female and cherub. all pretty reef safe. The flame out of the three is the one with more propensity to pick. Overall all are decent fish

I am currently having good luck with a Pygmy, Flame and a Potter's Pair for dwarfs.

However, any and every angel is a risk, some less then others, but a risk nevertheless. You have to decide if you want to take that risk, and are you willing to either live with the damage, or take it out if it does become an eater.

I have a female Genicanthus melanospilos( Japanese swallow tail) Unfortunately it likes to nip cynarina lacrymalis and trachyphylia.

For sure!
